Do You Carry Far Too Much Stuff At Once Up Your Stairs?

Sometimes I wish I had a bungalow because they don't have any stairs! Our stairs aren't too steep but I insist on carrying too much stuff up there at once...usually clothes. This is pure laziness, no other reason. It saves me making two trips which wouldn't be too much of a hardship would it, let's face it. There is a banister rail alongside the wall so I can steady myself...but the times I've gone up the stairs not being able to see in front of me due to the pile of clothes is quite frightening actually! In fact a disabled guy I once worked with said to me that "it's only a matter of time" before "someone like you falls down the stairs and ends up like me, in a wheelchair crippled." Nice of him to say so don't you think? Do you think he might be a tad bitter about his disability? You see, his disability didn't come about by falling down the stairs, it was due to a parachute jump that went wrong 25 years ago. Perhaps I carry all this stuff upstairs to defy him, who knows? I know it's silly and I should stop but I can't lol. Are you like me? Do silly things like this knowing full well that one day you'll end up in hospital with a few broken bones..or worse!

My first two houses were "ranch style", it one storey, and I liked it that way. This one is two storey, and I'd just as soon go back to one. I'm not to where it's a problem, but one of these days it could be. The kids like the stairs though.

That cats do that more than the children do...

Yes, I bet they do! Running up and down them at high speed no doubt, giving Mum a headache!

Hi Janey, I do the exact same thing! In my place the living room and kitchen are upstairs and bedrooms and bath are downstairs. I know...pretty freaky. My parking lot is a bit away from the complex. I come home with groceries and I am too bull-headed to make a couple of trips out to the car and then up the stairs so I just grab them all and juggle my way to and up. Thankfully I use those really sturdy reusable bags now. I have had the plastic cheap bags burst open on me with an armful of groceries part way up to my place or on the stairs...not good and I have a tendency to swear when this happens. I don't know what it is but I do lug as much up and down at a time as I can. As for that guy...I wouldn't have even listened to him. The one time I did fall down the stairs, I wasn't carrying a thing. I had slippers on and really really had to pee and dashed...not a good idea. Nothing broke...it is all good.

Hi sid556! Many thanks for your entertaining response. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is intent on carrying everything upstairs at once. I can imagine you swearing when you used to have those awful, plastic bags..I know exactly the kind you mean. Good for you that you have the re-usable, sturdy affairs now. I have been known to carry my lamp AND clothes upstairs all at the same time. The lamp gets in the way, I can't see in front of me, but do it anyway. Haha!

A tad bitter? Yes, I think so. In fact, I thought that as soon as I read his remark.

I'm convinced he got rid of me because I wasn't disabled like himself and another guy in the same office. You wouldn't think that disabled people could pick on an able-bodied person would you? But they did!

I do sometimes. Like you I carry up two boxes of wash at the same time if it saves me a trip. Plus my knee's hurt from climbing steps so the fewer times I do it, the better off my knees are.

That's well thought out my friend. Do one trip instead of two or three.

Hi, Janey1966. No. I don't have any stairs in my house at all. Everything is completely flat here! When I used to live in an apartment, last year, we had to walk up the stairs to get back inside of our apartment. So you can imagine me or my husband carrying groceries, boxes or bags while climbing at least, 10 to 12 steps before we reached the door to our apartment! So, you could only imagine us having bags and bags of groceries that we had to carry! It was a mess! Our legs became so tired till the point of us, not wanting to walk anymore. I was so glad when we finally moved out of this apartment complex. We did not have any elevators, so that "lack" made the situation so much harder on us. I have an Herniated Disc in my back, and my Chiropractor told me not to hold a baby. Well sometimes, I hold my four year old daughter while I am playing with her. Busted!!! I don't realize that I am doing this, but I try not to do it as much though. I think the comment that the guy has said to you was mean. Everyone won't go through the same issue. If you had to have became crippled due to a parachute jump, then this statement would have applied to you.

GUILTY!! I do it too and im always being very careful as I dont want to end up in the hospital. So im going slowly while I lean against the wall but, like you, Im not able to see in front of me haha! I also climb on high counter stools when I cant reach something and hubby keeps saying that one day, he'll find me on the floor. Im always making sure I can hang on to something first. We sure do dangerous things inside the home. PS: I think its best not to mention BP anywhere for now lol.

Our ceilings are high and it frustrates me that the stepladders aren't high enough for me to reach...er, stuff like the odd cobweb (not loads) here and there. Just as well I suppose!

I used to have high ceilings before and Id bug hubby to go up once a month to make sure nothing was crawling up there. We now live in a house that has 8' celings so I can manage that by myself hehe!! Try to convince your hubby to take care of it......promise him you'll give him some candy after HAHA!!

Hey Janey... I am somewhat like you... Doing dangerous things knowing fully what might happen... But I am into calculated risks... I mean, I run a risk when I have calculated what is the worst that can happen... Experience has taught me to think a little before jumping into dangers... ;) Take care...

Well, our stairs are carpeted so I've no idea if that's safer than exposing the wood underneath..certainly not as noisy! If the stairs were very steep there's no way I'd do what I describe but they're not too bad and there's a rail running alongside the wall. So I have the pile of clothes over one arm and I hold the banister rail with the other hand. Not ideal but it seems to work for me!

i am like that too. i generally take a lot of stuff up our stairs due to bad knees, that way i dont have to go up and down as often. see our house has 5 levels with stairs in between.

well, living in Texas like I do, I don't currently live in a 2 story house - and my knees really appreciate it too! I did live in one for 10 years, and the ONLY time I fell DOWN the stairs I caught myself on the rail. I did fall UP the stairs a few times. I've also done that more than a few times since, including crushing cartilage in my knee doing that. Since I fell off a horse in 7th grade - probably spring of 1966 - I've had some problems with my knees, I'm really lucky I never did worse than that!

I have a friend who fell off a pony a couple of years ago and she's having terrible problems with her back these days...so I can identify with what you are saying about the horse you fell off way back in 1966. I don't suppose you forget an event like that do you? That's what I mean about wanting a bungalow. The thing is, the ones that are up for sale in this city generally have had older people living in them and they haven't spent ANY money on them the whole time they've lived there. Still, prices are at a premium because they are bungalows which doesn't seem fair to me. Now, Mum has a place near her called Thornton and there are LOADS of bungalows but none are up for sale. Shame! PS You won't have any moggies running up and downstairs where you are either...and I know you've got quite a few of the little critters!

He he.. We've got a bungalow now - but it still doesn't stop me from carrying the "lazy man's load" and dropping stuff and having to go back and pick it up! If we have sat five shopping bags to bring in from the car, I will try and carry three in one hand and two in the other, only having to put one down if the door swings shut! Then I will spend far more time trying to collect all the handles together so that I can continue to carry all the bags. Honestly, it would be easier if I had just done one or two at a time! _Derek

Hi Derek! My husband does that with the food shopping bags. He carries all of them at once instead of going back to the car for a second time. Mind you, I do help him as well lol. I'm not that mean!

Janey..Look at it this way., The large pile of clothes will soften the blow!! only kidding. Seriously though, don't do that!! Now I have visions of you tumbling down a large flight of stairs. It only takes a minute to make two trips and also think of all tha extra exercise as stair climbing is one of the best exercises there is! Your neighbor is right and you could end up really hurting yourself. I live in Florida where homes are all built on slab hence no second floors to speak of. They can't dig foundations with cellars here because we basically live on a sandbar and they would hit water almost instantly so we all live on one level. In order to climb stairs you have to go to a gym and use a stairmaster or if you are financialy ept, buy one. I do neither. So, the moral of the story is, DONT DO IT!!! silly girl

Yes, I am silly but also EXTREMELY stubborn so I'm no likely to give up this quirky behaviour anytime soon lol. When I had that little spell in hospital recently they shoved me on a treadmill for a test. I loved it and never thought I would! We haven't the room for one here, more's the pity!

Hmm lets see well I do not have stairs and it is a good thing too because my mom decided she did not want a house with stairs because it would be to much of a hassle to be going up and down and especially while carrying heaving stuuf. Still one must always be careful of carrying to much heavy stuff because it can be really bad for your back. Oh broken bones that's why I am not a big fan of stairs they kind of scare me since one of my friends has stairs in her house I never like going up those things I'm always careful though I sometimes skip a step by mistake almost fell more than once I'm just glad I didn't.... or else.

Hello! I will try my very best to be careful, I promise. As for skipping stairs, I've lost count how many times I've done that (by accident of course) and I could feel my heart missing a beat, it was horrible. I envy my cat because she just flies up and down the stairs with ease!

Not any more as I don't have stairs since I moved - just three up to my front door!! Before that though I lived in a big four bedroomed house and I ALWAYS carried too much up stairs, but my worse moment was dropping my 18 month old daughter down the stairs!!! Thankfully she lived to tell the tale but it didn't do a lot for my heart!! Since I've moved and got out of the habit of stairs I find the ones at two of my daughters hoses shocking - they both have very narrow and twisty stairs and I'm on pins - especially if I stay and need to go down to the loo on the night!!!

Yes, I know what you mean. Stairs do vary don't they, weirdly enough! Ironically, my Mum's elderly friend fell in her own home recently (it was in the kitchen and she was on a chair trying to reach into a cupboard) but she has also previously fallen downstairs but kinda bounced from what her relatives have told us so didn't hurt herself..and I'm not kidding you, her stairs go STRAIGHT UP, it's like Everest, honestly. I'm amazed she had her accident in the kitchen and not on those stairs. I don't think she can ever go back there even though she wants to. A bungalow would be ideal for her but we shall have to wait and see what transpires.
