My mom is a diabetic and she has a sweet tooth. She just had her birthday, bought a couple of cakes but did not eat a single slice of any of them although she looked at them with wistful eyes. I promised myself that I would make some sweet dessert that she could eat. I bought Splenda, I have gren apples and I only need a good recipe. Do you have one? I can make wonderful apple pies with sugar, but don´t know how much splenda to put. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Hi marguicha. I don't know if anyone has already said this but thought I'd write anyway. I use Splenda all the time. Whatever amount of sugar the recipe calls for, use that same amount of Splenda. One cup sugar is equal to one cup Splenda. I think that's so sweet of you to make your mom a special, non-sugar, pie. I know I'd be tickled pink to receive something like that. I was called "borderline diabetic" by a stupid nurse practitioner at my old doctor's office. My blood sugar was 103 and she had me freaking! Once I learned that I was JUST over normal, all I did was start using Splenda and I'm fine now. Besides that, I've lost weight!

Maybe I should start to use Spklenda instead of sugar. The first problem is that it´s a lot more expensive. And MY second weight problem has nothing to do with sugar: I love mayo and fats. Have a lovely day!

Splenda is a lot more expensive than sugar and that's it's only drawback, as far as I can tell. When money is tight here, I use 1/2 Splenda and 1/2 sugar in whatever I'm making that uses sugar. It helps to make the Splenda last a little longer while having only half the calories of all sugar. I know exactly what you mean about loving mayo and fats! I'm guilty of that myself. Fat tastes GOOD! I use low-fat mayo and add a bit of spices to make up for the lack of taste. I cut out fat wherever I can so I can cheat every now and then and have something full of fat that tastes oh, so good! I've also recently added grapefruit to my daily diet. You actually lose weight by eating grapefruit. I read recently that, if you eat a half a grapefruit with every meal (3 times a day) and eat normally otherwise, you can lose around a pound a week. I don't think I can eat that much grapefruit but have added a whole one to each day. I just started this so I haven't noticed any weight loss so far so we'll see. Oh, by the way, I could never eat grapefruit without sugar on it so now I put Splenda on it and it tastes great. Just don't try eating a grapefruit after you've eaten anything sweet because there's not enough Splenda in the WORLD to make it taste good then. Thank you for the BR, too. I've been kinda sick all week and that really perked me up.

That idea about buying Splenda for myself so that I can diet is a no-no. I accept Splenda´s price for a diabetic, not for someone who overeats. I don´t like grapefruit. The last tiem I tried it I don´t know what I liked least: the bitter or the sour. I´m glad you liked the BR: you wholly deserved it. I don´t usually give BR so soon and most of the tiime I forget later. Take care!

I watch my diet very carefully, and consequently I am very healthy, and still working at 76 years of age. Years ago I weened myself from white sugar, because I knew it is not a good wholesome food. I love pie, and one of my favorites is Apple. I make a tasty apple pie without any sugar. I peel and slice 3 medium apples in a Bowl and mix 2 TBS tapioca, a tsp of cinnamon, and a tsp of lemon juice with a 1/3 cup of dried Cranberries or raisins. Pour mixture into pie shell, and add the top crust. bake at 145F for 45 minutes, covered with aluminum foil, uncover and continue cooking till the crust is browned. You will be surprised at the natural sweet flavor of this pie.

Splenda is Aspartame, which is a derivative of Saccharine which is a Poison. Do not recommend this product to your mom especially since she is already ill. Don't take my word for this! Please go on the net and check it out for yourself (if you love your mom) Never never eat sugar substitutes because they are a hundred times worse for your health than is sugar!

Splenda is fructose, not aspartame. But I´ll check. Thank you.

I have made apple pies for diabetics before. Although I have not done this with a full size pie, I think you could but this may give you some other ideas. Porportion they make a nice 1 serving treat. I have ate these and also my grandkids. I think they are great so maybe this will help you. I slice my apples and put them on the stove top in a pan, I add cinnamon to them and also apple juice or apple cider, depending on what I have. I cook them until they are soft. I mix a little corn starch and water together and pour into the apples to thicken them. Then set aside to cool. I roll my pie crust out (pie crust contains no sugar) then I cut it out with a 4" round cookie cutter, I place each round into a cupcake tin. Then I place about a tablespoon of the apple filling in each "pie". I have also used Smuckers All Fruit preserves in blueberry, apricot & strawberry. I place about a tablespoon or two in each 'pie'. I don't know if you have Smuckers all fruit preserve but it contains no sugar and no sugar substitute. It is sweetened with fruit juice. I bake at 375degrees until the pie crust is golden brown. I think 1/2 hour. I just bought the splenda. My Dr wants me to watch my sugar intake and recommended but I haven't used it yet. My daughter made brownies with it and she said they were 'nasty'!!!!!! I took care of my mother too and she had health problems and was diabetic. I can honestly understand what you are saying. I read the other posts. Happy Birthday to your mom and God Bless you and help you as you take care of her.

I used Splenda in a smaller amount thanthe sugar I normally use and it was very good. Nothing nasty about it. Maybe the apple sweetness helped. Thanks for your wishes.

they have the bags that they say you can replace one on one with regular sugar - I find the splenda is maybe a bit sweeter - good because I have a sweet tooth - maybe more than one... There is also a Splenda brown sugar that has a good recipe for an apple crumble on it... the brown sugar is half real sugar...

I am a diabetic and make this recipe - it is one that I adapeted for me APPLE TURNOVER FOR ONE Serves 1 100g flour 1 pinch salt 50g margarine ice water as needed 1 medium apple, peeled and sliced 1 teaspoon sweetener 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 4, 350°F (180°C). In a small bowl, combine flour and salt; rub in margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle with ice water and toss with a fork. Form into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into a 7-inch circle. Place apple slices on half of the circle; sprinkle with sweetener and cinnamon. Fold dough over filling, sealing edges with fingers or pressing with a fork. Brush with a little skimmed milk. Pr1ck top with a fork. Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake 25-30 minute or until golden brown.

She should check with her doctor. A small piece of apple pie might be OK for her. Apple pie contains a lot of cinnamon and cinammon helps individuals balance blood sugar. You could mix the splenda and sugar together. The splenda sugar blend they sell tastes just like sugar.

She will not check anything else with her doctor. She´s on doctor´s vacation because my brother is not in town. He wouldn´t let her eat any sweet thing. Now I´m in charge and the way I see it is that quality of life is as important as longevity. She wants sweets, let´s do it the best we can. But she is 86 years old, has heart and kidney problems but a sound head. She is entitled to choose.

I use the wal-mart brand of splenda. It is so much cheaper than the splenda. I use the same amount of it in apple pies that i would use for sugar. To be honest i don't usually measure it but it's probably around a cup full.

I don´t measure either. But this is my first try with Splenda. We don´t have Wallmart here and the pound of Splenda I bought better go a long way. It was VERY expensive.

From what I have read one can use sugar and Splenda interchangeably. Simply follow the directions for your favorite recipe and substitute the Splenda for sugar.

Here is a link to the splenda website. It says you use equal parts splenda for sugar. So if your recipie calls for 1 cup sugar, you can subsitutue 1 cup splenda. This is not a referal site. Information about splenda only: http://www.splenda.com/cooking-baking/conversion-charts

Thanks for helping. I will try Splenda to see what it tastes like and will try to add as little sugar as possible. I guess bown sugar is better as it is less refined.

Well Splenda packets have twice the sweetness of a Sugar packet so just use a whole bunch of packets I guess lol. I don't know about exact measurements when it comes to a big bag of splenda. You could always just use the natural sweetness of the apples and add owever much splenda you think is needed. Just taste the apples and the Splenda and experiment around. Or you could find a recipe.

I really don't have any idea how will you be able to prepare that apple pie for your mom. I also don't know splenda. I can really feel your concern for your mom. I also have a friend whose mom is suffering from diabetes though her mom doesn't care that much for sweets. I hope you will be able to get a recipe, you may check online recipes.

I can prepare apple pies (the best) from scrtch but with normal sugar. I´m thinking of adding the Splenda as if it was the sugar (but less quantity) and start trying until it tastes ok.
