Sports Injuries Then & Now

Today's top athletes in soccer, football, basketball, and baseball get injured quite often, and we often moan about the violence of wrestling. Today's sports though do not hold a candle to sports violence or injuries of yesteryear.

Rome's gladiators often ended their lives not of one piece. Their heads were cut from their necks via a Gladius Sword. -

Before this demise, they fought with injuries that were horrific. Chunks of Gladiatorial bodies were bitten off by swords or by the teeth of wild animals. Sometimes, gladiators who were young when they started, end up with one arm longer than the other from all the one armed work. Criminals who were exited frequently got infections from ill-fitting chains.

All this bloodletting sent the Roman crowds mad with excitement.
