The UK is not cheap to live in. Houses are expensive and rent is high now that people cannot borrow so much for mortgages. Although I do not live in the particular part of town, Poole has an area that is the 4th most expensive for property in the world.
We pay 20% value added tax on most goods, and a litre of petrol is $1.84.
The average salary is said to be $29,000 PA, but in my town people are far more likely to be earning £18 to $23,000 PA.

Holland is one of the most 'economical' countries. Average salary in US dollars is somewhere between 25.000 and 30.000, life can be pretty cheap although income tax is very high compared to other countries. But people in Liechtenstein and Luxembourg are much better off. ;)
