The local wildlife

A walk in the rain alongside the canal was made a lot more pleasant with the sighting of one of our local families of swans.
There are three families between my house and the village ( about 1/2 mile), this family actually has 7 cygnets although one is out of the picture, thankfully all the cygnets this year seem to have survived the foxes sadly the same can't be said for the ducklings we don't seem to have one left thanks to the foxes, merlins, herons and pike.
Nature can be quite cruel at time.
Do you have good wildlife to watch where you live?

Oh, heavens, yes! We have too much wildlife around here. I've seen deer, geese, ducks, turtles, snakes, mice, voles, moles, squirrels, groundhogs, rabbits, opossums and chipmunks. There is a family of herons living somewhere nearby. We see them occasionally in the lake or in an overhanging tree. We also have a tree stump that was shredded and the only culprit we could think of that would do that kind of damage is a bear. I haven't seen any bears but have been told that they are seen ocassionally. (Black bears.)
Our deer population seems to have dwindled since we moved here three years ago and we've been jokingly saying that my husband's cat has been killing them off. She's about four pounds of pure meanness! I hadn't seen any deer this year until last week when I spotted one coming from our wooded area and heading toward my vegetable garden. Luckily, I came outside just in time and scared the darned thing off. I kinda feel bad for the wildlife around here because of the extreme heat we've been experiencing. Something began eating my onions and, normally, they leave the onions alone. I think they're just so hungry for anything that hasn't dried up in this heat that they'll go for anything.
The last time I saw a rabbit was yesterday. It was in my cat's mouth.
My cat, Bean, is awfully good about catching rodent-type animals and killing them. I just can't watch.
I'd love to see swans in our lake. The only place I've ever seen swans, anywhere in the United States, was in a zoo. They are such lovely birds, much prettier than geese.

My goodness bears make my swans look very tame!!!
They can however turn a little nasty if you're not careful - especially when they have young!!
We do though have literally hundreds of swans and as I say in the fields as well - this picture taken aver from the canal at my back gate only has a few in the field sometimes it is actually turned white with the amount of them!!

Oh! I forgot frogs! I don't know how I could forget them because they're always so loud from dusk until I go to bed, especially those bullfrogs!

Our geese are like your swans, only not nearly as pretty. I've seen dozens of them in groups, sometimes as many as around 50, maybe more. My son lives on the other side of town and there are a few large ponds near his house where a lot of geese like to hang out. I'm sure swans are a lot like geese in their habits and nature, also with their predators. We have had a family of geese nest on the bank of our lake every year. It's so sweet to see the goslings swimming or waddling after their parents. Actually, it's usually one parent in front and the other bringing up the rear. I guess that's one way they try to protect their young from predators. Sadly, the same thing happens to the goslings as with the swans. I'm just thankful I haven't seen anything killing any of them.

Oh yes I live in one of green places maybe you know this place Latvia? There is little town called Ligatne near Sigulda there is very nice nature. Green and beautiful grass where is playing kids and cats. People who makes diffrent vegetables in their gardens. Beautiful forests where I can find berries. I like my town lakes, because there is living many ducks and geeses. In nights we can see little foxes and urchins. There also is very beautiful montains and caves which always visit tourists. Your place too sound nice. Take care, Have a nice day!

I see very little wildlife around here and I miss it tremendously. There are only a few birds, all the same kind (sparrows and finches). The closest place to walk is just a park with more birds! I used to live in the country where we saw all sorts of things, though.
I envy you your walk!

Hiya chem,
Our Swans and Ducks have had a really hard time this year there are no ducklings or cygnets. Someone told me that he saw Rats around there and it´s very likely to be true as there are no nothings this year. We have one pair of Swans who are there all the time but the Ducks fly off to a nearby River so they might well have had their Ducklings there instead as there are usually about thirty Ducks down there of all types and they vanished for weeks so I reckon that they might well have been nesting by the River. Here we are plagued with those turtles that People throw down the toilet they kill as well. The Swans never fly away from here never ever so I felt really sorry for them.

Swans are beautiful so thank you for uploading the photo of the cygnets and parents, very cute indeed.
Funnily enough, with us living in Cumbria there is an awful lot of countryside around us and loads of walks we can go on nearby..but we really wanted to go to Talkin' Tarn (which has been taken over by Carlisle City Council) and they had a Pay & Display on the Car Park. Now, when it was private the car park was free but to save the place being sold on (and probably never used again by the locals) Carlisle City Council bought it and vowed NEVER to install pay and display. Well, that's one of the first things they have implemented, it seems to me..so we came home without walking around the Tarn. It wasn't a lot of money, it was just the principle of it that annoyed us...and there weren't many there either. When it was free to park the place was always teeming with families walking their dogs.

There's quite a lot of birds not far from where I live, different ducks, gulls, oyster catchers etc. Where my horse it there's also swans, otters, foxes and we've had moose in town a couple of towns this summer. They had to shoot the first ones because they couldn't get them out of town.
I just visited a friend in Finland, she has hedgehogs and rabbits and foxes and hares in her garden! I want that too :-)
