Movie Critics

It seems like there are hundreds of critics who are quick to stamp their opinion on movies- telling the public whether a movie is worth their time and money or not. I personally don't listen to the critics but most of the time it seems like they are looking for deep, thought-provoking movies that take you on an emotional rollercoaster or make you look at the world in a different light. I have no problem with movies that do meet all these criteria, but I also enjoy a good light-hearted movie that was made to entertain and that's it. Do you listen to movie critics? If so, what critics do you listen to the most?

I really don't listen to movie critics. I am a movie critic myself so I would rather take the time to go to the cinema, fall in line to buy tickets and eat french fries while watching a good movie. I really believe all movies are good, they were intentionally made that way, it's the perception of the viewer that makes it a good movie or a bad movie. Still I would go to the movie and decide for myself if a movie was really good or not.

Listening to critics point of view looses the excitement of the movie. Critics are sometimes just like a your friends, co workers, relatives and other people around who have watched the movie and start a story telling and give their comments both positive and negative feedbacks I hate to hear them most specially when I haven't watch the movie yet.

Isn't that what critics are all about!! I have heard hundreds of definitions of critics which go like this: Losers who could not make much headway in their chosen profession, now go about criticizing those who have. :) I really do not listen too much to the movie critics because these days almost anyone who can be cynical seems to be a critic :). I rather pick and choose the stories that I like to watch and usually go and see the movie!! Cheers! Ram

Yes I do listen to critics to some degree. I think for some guilty pleasure summer blockbuster movies like transformers or GI Joe, it is always panned by critics so I would not listen to them. But most of the time, if the film is not that popular, I will go to EW or rottentomatoes to look their review and if it's unfavorable I will not waste my money to watch it.

Ah, I don't think I've ever encountered one, but again maybe I don't know if they are a critic. But like you, I enjoy almost most of movies, the horror, the romance, the spy, the thriller, and the light-hearted one.

no i dont listen to movie critics because everytime i watch a movie that i like/love or enjoyed and i read a review of it from any movie critic its usually bad for example if you look at imdb i disagreed with some of their rating because i think they deserved either more or less than they got, i dont understand why people still believe critics because the critic might be in to love stories and watches from paris with love yet that movie is more action that romance so it just depends on what is YOUR taste which is why i dont listen to what critics say

Interestingly in a survey of recent movie goers 8 out of 10 said they paid attention to what the critics say. I am sort of in that group as I regularly read what they say on various movies but don't just favour one, preferring to read from a variety of critics so I get a balanced picture of what a movie is about. The one issue which you have pretty much picked up on is that critics appear to be looking for earth changing movies, so to speak, those with a deeper context. The reason being is that these guys watch a lot of movies and tend to get bored by watching one unoriginal light hearted movie after another and unfortunately that too often shows in their reviews. They seem to forget that they are reviewing for the average Joe on the street who doesn't see as many movies.

I don't listen to movie critics the same way I don't listen to book reviews. I prefer to see the movie my self or read the novel and decide for my self whether the movie or novel is worth my time and money. Sometimes I enjoy watching a movie that movie critics would tell the public as a must not see since it's not worth your money. Sometimes also they highlight a certain movie and sensationalize it telling the public it's a must see but once I watch it I get disappointed. When I'm interested to a certain movie I don't check out the reviews so that I'll not be influenced by it. I just watch it, enjoy and then after seeing it's entirety that's when I decide whether I liked it or not.

No I really don't listen to film critics. I mean, I'm not even sure if I would understand their take on movies. I just leave the judging to myself. We have different opinions right? And every movie has a different impact on each of us. A bad movie for them may be a great movie for me because I appreciated it differently. Of course they are experts when it comes to movies, and bless them for that. I just judge the movie that I watch depending on its impact to me.
