For me, this past decade has proven there is no greater love than that shared with a canine companion. On Monday, July 12th, I lost a bit o' sunshine when I had to say goodbye to my Sunshine Girl, Scratch. We've been together for eight and half years and my heart is broken, as is her canine Momma's, Tidbit. We grieve for our baby together. Here's the poem I wrote for my girl... http://abitosunshineloveandwriting.blogspot.com/2010/07/love-loss-and-bit-o-sunshine.html I've had pets all my life, and have, of course, lost a few, but none seems to have bothered me to the depth of grief as this loss. Have you lost a canine companion? Care to share how you felt about it?

I lost my beloved Nera 7 months ago, and I still cry when I read about other's loss. I had cried each day for a few months before she left, because the vets didn't give her a chance. I hoped she could feel better, but she didn't. I had to let her go... It was such a hard decision to make... You are lucky you have Tidbit to ease your pain. I didn't have any pet to be there for me in those moments, but after two months of grieving, I brought home another puppy.

I'm so sorry you lost your Nera; happy you have a new puppy to love. Yes, having Tidbit is in many ways comforting. However, we grieve for our baby girl together. Tidbit is having eating issues from her own grief, so now I am quite worried about her. And, my love for each of my girls is different, as they are unique dogs, and it is difficult missing my silly sunshine girl, who always brought laughter and kisses into my day.

Ruthi, I don't think there is a purer love than that between a human and a dog. They sense when you are sad or happy. They are by your side through thick and thin. Although we know that dogs are temporary companions, the loss hits us like a ton of bricks. We keep expecting them to come running around the corner or greet us at the door. I had a yellow lab - her name was Meghan. I lost her when she was 3-1/2 years old and I swore up and down that I would never let another dog get that close to me again. And here I am sleeping with a 57 pounder - Muttley - I dread the day - They say time heals all wounds and you should remember the happy times. Get a new puppy and start all over (LOL!)

Oh, I do remember the happy times, but that's kinda what's makin' me sad, I miss my silly sunshine girl and all her kisses. I have Tidbit, who I'm just as attached to, so I'll forego a puppy for now... besides, I don't think my roomie would be too excited about a puppy, lol. Though, like you, there will always be a canine companion sleeping in my bed!

My best friend was a boarder collie. One day he just wasn't there. No one knew what happened to him. I could tell someone did. I was 6. I cried and then cried some more. I cried myself to sleep. I never have been attached to any pet like that again.

That's so sad, and especially that you were so young and nobody explained it to you in a way you'd understand, at least somewhat.
