why do people drop litter?

in the uk at the moment, there is a lot of concern about the problem with litter, and the cost of it being cleared. and it really makes me wonder WHY anyone would do it? often you actually see people dropping their rubbish as they walk down the street, even with a bin in easy reach. I work in a shop, and not only do people seem to think that it's okay to walk around a shop eating and drinking (I was brought up to know that this is very bad manners, and my mum would always make sure I finished what I was eating before we would go into a shop), not only that, but they will then leave empty food or drinks containers on the shelves in the shop. I honestly can't understand why people are so lazy, bad mannered, rude, ignorant and dirty. some people seem to think that there is something to be ridiculed in people that care enough to put their rubbish where it belongs. I think that people who drop litter are Arrogant. stupid. uneducated. rude. dirty. common. smelly (if you don't care about public hygeine, chances are that you don't care about personal hygiene either) I think that their houses are probably dirty and smelly too. if you drop litter, you probably think you're better than everyone else, even though you're worse. so there you go. how do you perceive people that drop litter? why do you think people do it? and, if you are the sort of person that does so, why are you too lazy and stupid to put it in the bin, like decent people?

I never drop litter, there are so many bins aroung there is no excuse for it these days. I walk my dog on beach that is quite secluded and kids go down there over the weekend and drink from glass bottles which they just leave or smash. It's a hazard to my dog and me and is just plain annoying. If they could carry the full bottles down to the beach why can't they take them away again when they are lighter? I always do if I'm eating or drinking in a public place, it's no bother and your harming nature or causing a hazard to anyone else.

I meant NOT harming nature, missed out a vital word there.

you mentioned it and i agree with you.they are just bunch of selfish people and do not care about others at all.it is a bad habit and i really get mad if someone throw rubbish outside the window littering outside and then try to make an innocent face.come on...i guessed this kind of people really do not know or recognize what bin and rubbish are and how they get connected!

i think people that drop their litter anywhere else are stupid and lazy. And I believe they are the same at home, because they are not shy to do it in public. At malls since when I go there I see that it is clean, it is so shameful to leave a trash there. And there are many hidden cameras that will caught you doing it. I know it is not hard to look for a bin, but why do other people can't do it. And also people like that are disrespectful. They do not respect other place.

Because they are childish, self-absorbed, self-centred and lazy. I have a friend who works in a park and has tried, unsuccessfully, to get the kids who sit around drinking there to at least put their rubbish in a bin. They think they are the cool alternative Emo kids, but they are just typical follow-the-herd obnoxious teenagers. Recently they've installed CCTV in the park and now they are hitting the little toe-rags with fines, perhaps THAT might have an impact. If it were me I'd make them spend a thousand hours cleaning up litter AND make them pay the wages of whoever had to supervise them while they were doing it.

Hi Galena!. Its a long time not hearing from you!. I think its because they are not care about their surrounding and to lazy to put the rubbish in it place. It so hard sometimes to make them change this habit. Its really bother me to see pile of garbage in the street but lucky the officer will clean it in the morning.

it's the matter of education itself. reception of general public ethic is important. somehow it also might be a problem where sometimes happens when education of public hygiene is not well received. by the way, not all people drop litter. although majority do.

I do not purposely drop litter but a couple of times I have gone into my bag and a sweet wrapper or a tissue has blown out and I honestly can't be bothered to chase it along the street to pick it up. I hate it when people litter when there is a bin right there, however I do find that in a lot of cases there are streets with loads of bins yet others where they are none (even though that street as a lot of fast food places etc). I work in a shop and find it extremely annoying when I find empty drunk cartons and sweet wrappers around the shop when I am tidying on a night. We do not have bins in the store for customer use but if you go to tills and ask if a shop assistant can put something in the bin for you then we will certainly do it since we have 11 tills and each till has a bin. We also have one at fitting room in case you are not planning on making a purchase.

people here are not disciplined either. they just drop their trash or litter just anywhere. but i can't blame the people. as the government here as has not done enough to put bin or trash can around the surroundings so that people can throw their thrash, if there is one trash bin at least for each block then people will bother to go to the trash bin. but we don't see that in our city not unless your inside a mall or some building but if you are out of the streets here i rarely see any trash bin at all. i think that they should have that also in the streets as sometimes we need to throw something that we can't put inside our bag or pocket and drop it when we have the chance to get back home or get to a place where there is a trash bin.

People are just lazy and uncaring. Why bother to find a trash can when someone else will just pick up your garbage later? It's disgusting, really. My parents taught me to clean up after myself.

well it comes to laziness and manners. its one of the biggest problems here in this country and it is too hard to regulate unless people will help themselves.

These people are not bad at all but they are habitual to do so. They need some guidance. They want love not hate. At first they will ignore you but at last they will be convinced. They enjoy for breaking some rules. You start enjoying to teach them in good words and dont mind if they resist in any way.
