Baby car seat - when children don't need it any more?

My brother's family came to visit us for a few weeks. Two days ago I went for a ride with my 9 years old nephew, and he wanted to stay on the seat right next to me. I told him that the law in my country does not permit this. A child under the age of 14, is not allowed to sit on the front seat of the car, children are supposed to sit only on the back seat of the car, with the belt on. He said that in his country (he lives in Switzerland) children are supposed to use the car seat until they are 14. I couldn't beleive him, but he insisted it is true. Now I'm asking you, mylotters, could he be right about the age of leaving the car seat, or did he lied to me? In your country what does the law say about that?

I am not too sure about the law in India regarding children. I see lots of people driving with children with no proper restraint on. If there is a law, then there's no one upholding the law. However in UK, 12 years or older can use adult seat belt. Children younger than 12 years or shorter than 135cm need to use either a car seat or booster seat. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure safety of the children younger than 14 years.

It seems to me that in India the law is upholded like in my country. :)) But when it comes to the safety of your own children, you must be mad not to respect the law. If the law in UK says that the age is 12, maybe my nephew is right.
