Well, it's a start anyways. North Carolina has been known to use gas chambers to put down the pets who are unfortunate in finding a loving home. The method has been fought against because it's inhumane and cruel. As of last night, from watching the news on TV Yakin County has done away with their gas chambers! YES! One down, many more to go including my own, Rockingham however, when one stop/start the others usually follow suit. Hopefully that will be the case. No living being, regardless if animal or human, deserves to die in that horrible manner. So keep up the good fight! We will not be silenced! Fight for their rights too because these furry friends can't a d depend on us to fight for them! What do you think? Do you think its progress in the making? I sure happened so and fast! YIPPEE!!!! One down..... How's that for a positive? When I have one, I DO share although its not often.

Yes it is progress in the right direction. I just hope and pray that the other counties follow suit and soon. You and I with computers.... mine is giving me such a fit that I'm constantly having to reboot to get something to work. I HATE IT! UGH! I've even did a system restore a couple of times which worked but only for a short time then it's back to the same ole same old. Hubby wants to get me a new one, which is much better than this one but (aren't they always better than what we have) but we're saving up for a truck because the one he has now reminds him too much of his parents who just passed a couple of years ago and I'm not comfortable riding in it not alone, driving it so it has to go so I've told him that the computer can wait till we get a truck and get rid of this one. Always something to itch our tails, eh? How much is your internet bill?

CatsandDogs, This a grand move in the right direction. I've had animals that I have had to be put down because of health issues and it just tears me apart, but I am always with them to the very end. I can't imagine what an animal goes through to be put down in such an inhumane way in a gas chamber. On the network news the other night, there was a report that was telling about all the animals that have had to be surrendered because of the BP diaster. People that have had to leave because their businesses had gone under and couldn't take their animals with them are leaving them at shelters. The shelters were trying to find homes for them but it was becoming an issue where many of them would have to be put down. The next night a report came on that was telling that all the animals that had been shown in the previous nights newscast had found homes. People were calling in from across the country to adopt them. I'm in tears just thinking about this. it makes my heart feel glad for them. If news stations could just do this as a regular thing it could help many animals find homes. Not just on the local stations, but on the network stations as well.

Hate to be a downer Dawn, but it doesn't necessarily mean the shelters will turn into no kill shelters, it just means that they are doing away with the gas chamber means to kill unwanted animals at these shelters. NYC area did away with the gas chamber means of killing pets only last year, yet for High Kill shelters like AC&C they still kill them via injection

Oh I agree!! But one step at a time, I guess. I'd LOVE to see them all turn into no kill shelters and fix them all so there wouldn't be any more breeding. THAT'S the RIGHT way to do things, let them live out their lives, they don't live long anyways so let them live out their lives on a sanctuary somewhere. I think that's the right way to do things but one thing at a time then maybe we can get there.

No, I wasn't intending to imply that this meant the shelter had gone to no kill...

That's really good to know. One step ahead and hopefully, animal abuse will stop too. I am personally against using the gas chamber method. Just thinking about it makes me shudder.

I don't understand how gassing would be inhumane. Don't they just go to sleep and then die? I know that the shelters in Arizona used to use a very painful method of pressurization to kill unwanted animals and thank God they stopped that. What is North Carolina doing if they are not using gas? It's awful that we have to kill animals. If people would just be responsible and breed humanely as well as spay and neuter we wouldn't have such a problem.

That is good news Cats and a definite step in the right direction! Gas chambers are a horrible way to put animals down and I dream of the day when they will not be used anywhere in the world! I would like to hear of shelters that don’t kill animals too but that may not be possible due to the high number of homeless pets; it’s so sad...I wish I had the power and the finances to do something for the innocent animals looking for homes.

This is an issue near and dear to my heart and even wrote an article about the gas chamber method of "euthanizing" unwanted pets ...only HALF of the states in America have eliminated the gas chamber method...NYC ONLY stopped it last year! The worse offenders do seem to be the southern states like NC and SC. As you might know I spend a LOT of time over at Facebook where there are a whole bunch of us making our voices heard about the gas chamber killing at shelters. Do have a question though for you. Glad to hear Yakin County is eliminating gas chambers but is that effective immediately? Georgia only recently passed a law to stop gas chambers, known as Gracie's Law, but won't take effect until January 2011, in the meantime that means animals will still suffer being killed this way

Good for them! The helpless have been helped.....I think we are making progress....in our city unfortuately someone donated $150,000.00 for us to get a new humane society building addition......and a creep that was holding the money in escrow stole it all so now it's back to square one for us.....At least some places are making some progress!

That's great! I always fight for the right of animals, I almost got killed once because of it and would do it again and again. They can't talk, they don't pay taxes so they need living human angels to talk, to protect and fight the war for them. Who really love animals: Be Vegetarian. Eating meat is murderer too.

I m a animal lover too. I like puppy and kittens.but not dogs and cats.. I had a bad experience with the street dogs so I prefer keep there population in check so that they dont create a menance. Instead of killing they an use sterility method to check there population.
