Absurd People

This was a couple of years ago, and just thinking about it now, I shake my head. My uncle, one of my father's brothers, had a heart attack. Instead of calling 911, my aunt thought it would be better to take him to the fire department up the street first (it was much closer than the nearest hospital). I mean, all the time at least in the U.S., the fire department shows up often time before the ambulance. And they are trained in CPR and such. But here is the kicker: before she took him to the fire station, she stopped at the local gas station so she could get a soda. A soda! I couldn't believe it when I heard the story. She's my aunt by marriage, so her brain doesn't come directly from my family. Once taken to the hospital, my uncle had a quadruple bypass. And to this day, my aunt thinks she did nothing wrong. This woman has a Masters degree, is heavily involved in the community, and a perfectionist. Just goes to show you, you can't "learn" common sense. Do you know any absurd people?

That is ridiculous! I can't really think of anything that absurd off the top of my head. Though I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine who was complaining about his girlfriend. They live together but don't have kids, and the girlfriend is really immature and irresponsible. She's lazy about getting chores done, and expects him to come home and "help around the house". Thing is, he works a 40 hour a week job, plus does mechanical work on the side to earn extra money. But she doesn't work, doesn't drive, doesn't go to school. She's either stuck home or she goes out and hangs out with friends. So considering they have no kids and she has no life.. how does she expect him to help out around the house??

He's not going to get rid of her, not anytime soon anyways. I really don't know what he sees in her.. she drives me absolutely crazy to the point where I've decided I don't want to be around her anymore. It's a shame though because he's a pretty nice guy and he and my hubby are good friends. I guess he sort of feels like he can't do any better.. I think his last girlfriend hurt him real bad.

I know a few people that it amazes me how "stupid" they can be for as smart as they are. Common sense is something that a lot of "book' smart people just do not have. I can't help but wonder if your uncle had gotten to the hospital just a little bit sooner if his heart attach would not have been quite so severe as to require a quadruple bypass.

you know thats scary that people like that have so much influence in communities or maybe even higher levels such as states or nations. people should randomly be quizzed on common sense issues before getting into higher levels of power.

I find it highly amusing that people such as your Aunt manage to survive in this world. Heart attacks are serious issues, and her method of dealing with it could have cost your Uncle is life. As for knowing absurd people, yeah, more than I can to think of. Common sense is something that society as a whole lacks. No wonder our species is doomed!

hi ambiepam wow what an odd woman, a soda took precedence over a man with a heart attack? no I guess common sense is either something you are born with or not. wow.oh yes Allie A second Cousin of mine who came to visit my mom with a box of raggedy clothes with actual holes in some of them. My mom who had real common sense said,. caustically, "take those rags back and give them to someone who buys rags. We have plenty of good clothes, thanks for nothing".Alley turned red, got her lumox of a son and sped off in their car. My mom was an expert seamstress and could make beautiful dresses, prettier than those in the store in that era.Ally had a BA degree and no common sense at all.

Good grief. If she wouldn't wear them, why in the world would she think someone else would want to wear clothes with holes.

WOW! That just ruined any faith i had left in humanity. Yes, I bet everyone -including me- know some ridiculous people. My grandmother who is brain related to me,once got stuck in those rotating doors for 2 hours because she couldn't figure out how to get out of them. And my friend once walked under the caution tape at a burning building into a resteraunt because she was meeting her co-worker for lunch and she wanted to tell him to get out of there, the buildings was on fire.So i think it's apretty common occurence for people who are usually smart have alack of common sense

I have met many in my life! And it seems the older I get the more I meet! LOL..right now I know the county commissioner who has been charged with racketeering and embesselment charges....so far they have found over a million dollars is missing from people's escrow accounts that were at her business...she did it because she is a heavy gambler! Well today I found out that she is out of jail on bail and is back down at the casino which by the way is in another state! And when you felony charges against you going out of state is a no no.....part of the money that is missing was a big donation to our humane society for an addition to their shelter....$150,000.00 of it!

Common sense, you either have it or you don't, lol! Could it be she thought he just had indigestion or something and didn't think it was serious? I never have heard of anything so ridiculous at all, how utterly crazy. All I have to do is look around at some of these parking lots and how they designed them, and think to myself, "Yeh, these are college educated people" without any real common sense. I have been doing that quite a bit lately, haha, looking around at stuff and going "Why did they do that?"...how dumb! No, I really don't know anyone who is like this, thank goodness. Glad to hear her Brain doesn't come directly from your family, LOL! That's the BEST comment I've heard on myLot in a long time!!

That sounds like a really bad situation and I guess she wasn't thinking straight at the time! I think there are a lot of situations whereby common sense doesn't play a part! After the situation is over there is time to reflect and we say to ourselves 'oh, I cannot believe I did that!' I tend to think of some of those shows that display the acts of dumb criminals and how silly they can be when carrying out their brief spell of crime! I'm glad your situation was resolved though as it could have been so much worse! Andrew

Okaaaay…I thought going to the fire department was odd enough; I know they are trained in CPR but they are not a hospital! Stopping for a soda on the way astounded me even more! What was wrong with calling an ambulance and getting a drink after the husband was taken care of and on his way to hospital? I know what was missing here...Common sense! Bookish intelligence is worth nothing if you can’t even prioritise correctly when a man has a heart attack! I know several absurd people, like the mother whose child needed braces on her legs to avoid surgery because she could only walk on her tippy toes when she was five and the kid is now eight, still walks on her toes and in regards to the braces her mother says, “Oh, yes I must get around to that…” WTF???

Her brain does not come directly from your family? Now that is a cool way to relate to people who you might be ashamed of, for being in any sort of distant relationship with you. Nice.

Education in many instances doesn't mean people have common sense.People excel in education but what is the use as demonstrated in your case. She did not even get her priorities right. If you can't use your knowledge to save your kith and kin to what use is this education?I once went in an emergency and found a woman shrieking in front of the collapsing patient.I put my finger on my lip to indicate one shouldn't shout at this stage. All this while others were helping the doctor to do the preliminary inquiry.

I think these kind of people are just short of common sense or she just doesn't love your uncle any more. Because usually at these kinds of situation, not to say a wife, if it is a stranger with high moral will stop to save him first. A soda seems more inportant than a life, a husband, I just couldn't acept these kinds of things, nor will I forfive these kinds of people who did something like this to my family of my friends.
