are varicose veins simply a cosmetic problem?

Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic aberration. Any vein can become varicose but the veins of the legs and feet are more often affected because they work more hard to push the blood uphill to the heart.

Beyond the way they look, I have a transient one in the back of one leg and that little sucker really hurts when it kicks off. It throbs, gets hot, and gets swollen. I don't even noice what it looks like with all the rest of it.
