What does it say?

The roomie read the paperwork I brought home from the spay today. I was still hauling in cats at that point and then my stuff from the car. So, when she got off we were talking in her room and she said.
"It said they also got a tattoo, a green one," she told me.
??
So I leaned over, shoved Pong out of my face, moved Ping aside and looked at Taillight's tummy.
"What does it say?" she asks.
"Nothing, its just a green line," I replied.
"Why did they do it?" she asked.
"Probably because the scar is less than an inch long, and they are getting hard to see if they don't do something."
"Why there?" she asked.
"That's where they shave them to look for a scar," I replied.
"Oh."
so, you learn anything new today? I did, that they are now giving the girls green tats to show they've been fixed...

They must have just started doing that. Marking them is a good idea! I would think it would still be hard to see after the fur starts growing back. Marking them on the ear would be better!

they "notch" the ear to tell that a feral cat is fixed just by looking at them, but these aren't feral, someone could probably walk up to them and carry them away (like I'd let them out or anything) I wish it were that easy for some of the cats I've rescued...

Well, I guess that makes sense because it senseless to open up a female just to see if here system is still there and there is no external way to tell if a female has been spay? That is interesting, I didn't know they had started doing that, they didn't do that to my cats but it makes senses to mark them. Especially with all the stray cats that are now being brought in fixed, and released.

with the stray cats, they "notch" the ear to show that the cat has been fixed... when we got our 3 feral kittens fixed last November, we had them notch the girls on the left ear, but the boy on the right so we could tell Elmer from Emily...

Huh!
You know, I often wondered about that when I was a kid.
Now I know why my mom had one of those things, when I first saw her wearing her new bikini.

Notching or tattooing the ears of a pet was abandoned, the practice not the pet, because it was considered ugly.
Here is a better factoid, There are some men who feel emasculated at the idea of their male dogs being castrated, some will say the dog will "feel" different and others will say that it is like a woman undergoing a mastectomy, so vets nowadays can offer surgical implants to replace the missing balls and the dog will have the appearance of being intact. Fake balls to fake out your neighbors.

That is so stupid, the whole thing is a MAN thing, not a reality thing, dogs (as a male dog is actually called) don't care, its the HUMAN that has the problem.
They still notch feral cat's ears because it can make them identifiable on sight if the cat is fixed or not.

They still notch or top the ear of ferals who were altered and released. It's the only way to know who is spayed and who isn't.
Your referring to Nusticals. right? That's a guy thing. Guys are babies where it comes to their parts. Cats and dogs don't care about their parts. They lead happier healthier lives without them. The males are much happier when they don't have the hormones telling them breed, breed, breed and a door keeping them in so that they can't.

Sorry I wasn't clear there, I meant the ear notching was abandoned in PETS due to appearance. Since a feral has no owner there is nobody to complain at the "unsightly" look.
Actually some places prefer tattooing the ear in ferals as many cats will fight and get their ears damaged and be mistaken as fixed when they aren't.
And yes, the Neuticles.. man's self-esteem knows no bounds.

That's interesting.
And I learned something new today, too.
Not to do with cats, though.
Apparently, one can book an hour session in a studio in the main library downtown to use a piano...

Well I didn't know they did this, so I guess I learned something new today. That's a great idea and helps so much, especially if they are lost and brought to a shelter. I would imagine most people if they are looking for a cat, would prefer that this was done.
I didn't know that they notched the ear either. Do they do that everywhere or just in your area?
I wonder if there would be any problems with this..like "loser" people using a marker on cats saying they're fixed when they're not to get rid of them. You know, these so-called scammers saying they are re-homing a cat they found but they're just people in the business of selling animals, not caring in the least about the cat. What do you think?

I think it would be just as easy to fix them than to give them a tat - because you gotta knock them out either way
and if a cat has a notched ear and ISN'T feral, its been rescued from a feral colony and was thought to be feral
mind you, I have 3 ferals that aren't notched in my house because I don't plan them to go anywhere else, they are here for keeps

My older cat had a tattoo on the inside of his ear to show that he had been ‘fixed’ although; being a boy it was not too hard to tell! My dog is a female and I can’t see any tattoos on her, I will ask the vet because it was the same one that did both of them. My other two cats don’t seem to have any tats that I can see although they've both been 'done'. I read in your other discussion that you got the spaying done for almost free, lucky break!
As far as learning anything new today I have learned heaps right here on MyLot! I posted a computer question and received enlightening answers, so now I know more than when I started!
