Maxine The Runaway Cow ~~ An Amazing Story~This Is Why I'm Turning Vegetarian

This is truly an amazing story. One day, back in 2007, a cow tagged for slaughter somehow managed to escape the butcher's knife and ran free in the streets of Queens, NY. Animal Care and Control came into the scene and was able to bring this female cow to safety. Farm Santuary heard of the story, and decided to bring this cow, which they named "Maxine" to their 175 acre sanctuary in where Maxine will live the rest of her days in peaceful surroundings with no fear of becoming someone's dinner. Watch this video all about Maxine's story http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1bVLSfRNm0&feature=related Okay going to get a little preachy here: While not a full vegetarian yet, I have eliminated a lot of meat in my diet, and frankly I just plain don't miss it. Anyone who knows me, knows what an animal activist I am, and after being exposed to graphic videos of how farm animals are treated in farm factories, I just can't personally sanction eating meat much anymore. (Though will buy organically raised meats) We're so accustomed to seeing nicely wrapped up meat without really thinking where that meat came from--a living animal. While yes, SOME farm animals raised for human consumption, especially organically raised animals live a better life and humanely treated, this is not the case with farm factory type animals where many of the animals are pumped up with hormones, antibiotics, and god knows what else, live in overcrowded conditions, and often diseased. The worse offenders in the farm factory raised animals are fast food chains....so next time you have that hamburger at Burger King, maybe think of Maxine....who unlike her fellow cows at farm factories, is at least free to live the rest of her life in peace. I haven't had a hamburger since November of last year (and you're looking at a person who ate a hamburger everyday), haven't had any beef in months, and mainly due to my budget, I haven't eaten in a fast food restaurant in decades Here's a link to FarmSanctuary http://www.farmsanctuary.org/ Okay..so...have any of you decided to change your lifestyle, especially eating habits when made aware of the horrendous conditions farm factory animals endure??

For one, I agree with bearhugs, except we can't afford organic meat, but when we can buy it, we do. I hate how the majority of farms deal in their animals, my daughter showed me a site once about pigs and chickens and the horrors involved in not only their care, but in handling their slaughter, it was disgusting. I do applaud you for going vegetarian, it is healthier for you. The only meat I have taken out of my diet is shellfish and pork, but this is a couple reasons, 1. G♥d does say they are unclean and 2. Science has proven how unclean they are..Being pork/shellfish free for over a year now, I feel so much better and not as tired..And whenever I smell or touch, (Because my husband, though he cut down in it, still eats both), it turns my stomach..

I think what turned me off of clams was one time my mother made a clam dinner for some guests we were having (this was when I was a kid)---well, my mother wasn't a cook (if she could burn water she would have...LOL)...anyway never had clams before, took one taste, and between my mother's lousy cooking of them and their rubbery texture it was enough to turn me off of clams forever

I haven't eaten pork in ages....never really cared for it. One of the first meats though I gave up years ago was veal. That was the first time I became aware of how calves were treated for the veal industry and thought no way could I eat them again Shellfish...I do love shrimp, but clams, mussels, oysters??? Yuk.

I tried veal I think once and didn't care for it, so it isn't something I eat. I use to eat shrimp and clams, batter dipped and fried, but no more. The mussels and oysters? Never tried them and no desire to, even before I knew how unclean they are.So I am with you..YUK!!! :)

There is another link on the same page that shows her at sanctuary. Same video, but about 1 minute longer. She is so happy she's running and playing in the yard. Probably the first time in her life. I don't think I can ever eat meat again after watching this. That face is just to cute.

Yes, I did happen to see the longer version...It'd be great if all cows could run free like that, even the ones that are raised for food.

If all animals had that freedom. I would mind raising them for food. A lot of people who feed raw only buy organic free range meat. Free range meat is tougher than factory raised meat. The animals actually develop muscles from exercise.

This video made me cry. I am vegetarian for many, many years now. I still hear comments from people like " if you start normal eating, maybe you can gain few pounds". I am skinny, but not too skinny ( in USA I am consider skinny, but in Europe I am rather an average) They say normal, means eating meat. My respond is always the same "I don't eat my friends".

I do it fish once a week. I stay away from cow dairy, but I do eat goat cheese and goat milk. During the summer my diet is raw in 95%....fruits and veggies. I wish to have my own ranch with different animals. Not for meat for sure.

You're not the only one crying with that video. LOL--I'm "skinny" too, gee if anything I could stand to gain a bit of weight. I know you're vegetarian, but do you eat fish??? That's the one "meat" I would have a hard time in giving up. I haven't eaten pork in ages (just don't care for it), and gave up veal years ago when I heard how calves were kept

Where am I going to get my pheasant stories? Oh Pye, one of the things I liked about you was that you were a member of PETA and didn't hate us meat eaters. But seriously yes, I have become aware of these things, and actually I've become less of a meat eater naturally. My taste buds just don't want red meat anymore. And after I found out a certain way they kill pigs (which truthfully is short and one of the most painless ways I've heard of animals being killed - is that an oxymoron?), I've given up pork mostly. If I could afford to eat only fish, I would. I don't know how you feel about that, and I understand why people DON'T eat fish either, but I would happily consume fish as my only "meat" if I could find a way. And anyone reading this who doesn't know my situation, please don't tell me that I'm not trying hard enough. You know Pye, my doctor keeps telling me I need to eat more red meat. I wonder what he tells vegetarians or vegans.

Actually it was duck...I did have pheasant once for a Thanksgiving dinner and really liked it. Then sometime later I saw how beautiful pheasants were and said, nope never going to eat them again. As for your doc..are you anemic? Maybe he's suggesting red meat to get more iron...but did you know you can get iron just from having a spoonful of molasses? That was an old time remedy of my great grandmother's

Yes, it is the anemic thing. But I just take an iron tablet. We raised 2 cows and a bull once. A man wanted to do something nice for us, and he knew we had moved to a house with a little bit of land. We were having a hard time putting food on the table. We raised the cows and bull for about 6 months. I fed them every day, and I named them. I liked them. I thought I would have trouble when the time came to eat them. I didn't. I was grateful for their sacrifice though.

I should probably add we didn't kill them. The man who gave them to us raised his own lifestock, and did the job himself on his own farm.

Well, I am sorry to say, giving up meat is not an option for me. I would like to be able to do what my family does which is purchase a cow from a farmer they know and have it slaughtered. Its healthier, tastes better, and is better for the animal. I am not able to do that here but wish I could.

Iron is my problem and we just don't have the enzymes to efficiently extract it from plants. Watch out for the mercury in fish. They say it effects more than tuna. Peanut Butter is a good protein. Its what I eat when I don't eat much meat. I am all for campaigning for better treatment of farm animals, but as a Biologist I knew we are built to eat some protein therefore, I imagine I will always eat some meat. We can't get all the amino acids we need from any one plants but you can find them all in meat plus the iron I need. I am glad for anyone I know to be vegetarian or Vegan as the case may be as long as they pay attention to their dietary needs but I don't ever see myself doing it. And I am glad to accommodate Vegetarian or Vegan house guests as long as they don't mind me eating meat. I make a descent Vegetarian Chili that I developed to be able to feed some of my friends. It is terrible how all animals are treated, we should do better.

Do you have special dietary needs? The one "meat" I don't plan on giving up is fish...I have special dietary needs and need a lot of protein in my diet...and tofu just doesn't cut it for me..anyway hate the stuff...LOL

I don't consider myself a vegetarian but I don't eat much meat. As you said, we are used to nice neatly wrapped meat, and don't think about where it comes from. When we do, it is upsetting. Too bad there aren't more stories like Maxines!

I don't think I would have a problem eating meats if all animals were raised on farms that are humane...but all too many animals are raised in farm factories...ever see any of the videos about them?

i love runaway cow stories. i think the ones that run should definetly get a reprieve. i've been cutting back on my meat just in general-that only adds to why. 1 it's better for me and 2 i can't digest it well anyway and 3 i'm having a personal issue with it as an animal lover.optimately,i'd like to do away with it entirely eventually.

I have limited my meat intake drastically. I have gone back to the way I ate when I lived in Thailand. I have very small amounts of meat mixed in with rice and veggies. I find that I feel much better eating that way than having huge portions of meat at my meals. I don't eat hamburgers any more. I can't stand the taste of the ones that come from fast food restaurants. I haven't had more than two in the past eleven years simply because of the fact that the thought of eating a hamburger turns my stomach. When I do eat meat it's mostly chicken or turkey. I do add fish from time to time, but it isn't too often as it is nearly as expensive as eating beef.

I didn't know you lived in Thailand! I find I'm eating more rice and veggies too, I also started making my own veggie burgers and they are delicious...I find I only need to eat half as they are so filling. That's why I stopped eating hamburgers at fast food places too..I found they just didn't taste all that great

I've been a Farmer all My life. For 30 years I was a Beef Farmer and I raised Purebred Aberdeen Angus Cattle. I loved those Cattle as they Grazed in the fields, and loved them just as much on my plate at dinner. I had them custom slaughtered and sold the meat to my friends and customers. I was very proud of my cattle both on the hoof, and on the Dinner Table. At that time there was no Organic Beef or Vegetables, but those Angus Cattle were as organic as any beef today. If you wanna be a vegetarian that's your business, but I will still be eating Good Beef, and enjoying every delicious Bite!

Well barehugs, yours was a more "idyllic" means of raising the cattle. That's precisely the way we would like to think all our animals are raised for food--gently grazing grass, roaming free. feeling the sun...sadly it's not though. Have you ever seen any of the graphic videos I'm talking about that show how farm factory animals are raised?

The way you raised them is organic. If they have pasture and are individually slaughtered, that's organic. I wish all meat was raised that way.

Hi Pye, I have not watched the video yet but I will after dinner. I don't eat a lot of meat anyway and lately I've been living off from vege wraps and salads, egg salad etc. I've been trying to shed a few pounds I gained when I quit smoking for a while. Anyway tonite I'm taking a little break from it. I made this great lasagna and am waiting for my girls to show up. I am really hungry and I know that if I watch that video, I will not be able to eat it. As for fast foods....I can't even remember the last time I had a burger from any of those places. Two of my girls work at Wendy's and are always telling me to go thru the drive-thru for a discount on lunch and I just have had no desire to. I'll be back later to watch that video, ok,Pye?

I read that story and I thought that was one smart cow. Now if that cow has babies and they all go on the lamb and the rest have babies, we'll soon have a cow revolt! There was a book at our cooperative food company that I just had to read, "You can't get mad vegetable disease." Well it was more of a phamphet, but it was cute and came out during mad cow disease. I eat fish burgers or veggie burgers at the food chains, well, now I can't eat the veggie ones because they have too much salt. I find when I go to pot lucks, vegetarian or otherwise, people use way too much salt for me. I have to drink tons of water and my veins actually get wider and my extremidies hurt.

Good on Maxine for running away, I am so glad her story ended happily. I am not a vegetarian but I rarely eat red meat because I don’t particularly like it. I remember my mother trying to force me to eat steak as a kid and me not being able to swallow it once I got it into my mouth! I haven’t been able to sit down and eat a steak since childhood and after seeing that video I am quite glad!

I think that's precisely "it"--we often don't think about what we're eating, like where that steak is coming from, and then seeing that gentle, docile face of Maxine it kind of hits home, right?

Well I've already switched to organic as much as I can afford and as much as I can find it. I've sort of played with vegetarianism a bit. The two problems I've run into are 1) the rest of the family isn't on board and 2) I'm just not that creative with food.
