Reader's Digest Version

Have you ever watched a movie and thought that overall it had a nice storyline, but it could have been fleshed out more? For example, I watched Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium with Natalie Portman, Dennis Hoffman and Jason Bateman. It's an overall cute movie, but at the end of it I was still not completely drawn into it. To me, I was more interested and invested in the little boy than I was with the main female character. Also it seemed like it was a shortened version of the tale like how reader's digest gives you the bare bones of a book. Have you ever watched a movie and thought "that's it" or "it might be missing something"? What movie have you seen that you believe could have fleshed out the story/characters a little bit more?

To be honest this happens pretty much all the time for me and often feel that somewhere in the making of a movie they have failed to flesh out or focus on something pivotal. For example I've just watched a movie called "Nobel Son" which is a movie which twists and turns all over the place with nothing quite as it seems. The annoying thing is that so much time was spent on making it all very stylish that the storyline suffers and ends up missing vital character elements to make it more coherent.

I think that is a trend nowadays- focus on the styling of the movie more than the storyline. As if their audience won't notice that the story is lacking if they punch up other things in the movie.

Well I read lots of books... so most movies feel very brief and un-fleshed out to me. (By the way, I actually really enjoyed "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" and I really don't feel it was brief at all. In fact, it felt to me like they spent more time on the characters than loads of movies do.) The only time movies actually feel like they're getting close to how good a book can really flesh everything out is when they're longer than 3 hours. I really enjoy watching Tv mini-series because it's almost like watching a book to me. They take their time to tell the story and really get you into caring about the characters

I will agree with you on most mini-series, they do take the time and develop the story and characters.
