My rant about dangerous driving..

Ok, here in sunny Queensland in Australia, dangerous driving is considered anything 40km & more over the speed limit...however, my rant isn't about the high speeds...it's also been proven that anything 10km & more under the speed limit in good conditions is considered dangerous driving too...why oh why don't the police pull up the people driving too slow & give them a ticket too?? I used to work for Queendlans Transport (our DMV) & I know the police CAN do it but they don't!!
When people drive too slow (& I have noticed it's maily older people 50 years old & over), it causes the people who actually want to do the speed limit to get very angry especially if they can't get around them which in turn can cause road rage which you can get booked for. So why don't the police do something about it?? I'm trying not to offend anyone who fits into this age category but where I live, it's either young families (like me) or old people so it's not as if they're driving too slow because they don't know where they're going.
I believe that anyone over the age of say 65 should be re-assessed by having another driving test to se if they are eligible to keep their licences. I know this may sound cruel but if you lived where I do, you would understand.
What are your thoughts on the matter?

I agree with you. I think that older drivers need to be re-assessed on a regular basis. I am not sure if 65 is the right age. Perhaps at 70 though, people should have to be retested every two years or so. I know what you mean. The Gold Coast has the the oldest population in the country I believe and I know that the Sunshine Coast would be similar. We are surrounded by older drivers who do the weirdest things and who like to drive at a snails pace on the freeway! I used to be a panel beater for 16 years and I can tell you that a lot of the cars that I fixed were owned by older drivers!

The only reason I think the testing age hould be lowered is because from the age of 75, you MUST have a Queensland Transport medical certificate issued by your doctor every 12 months before you can renew your licence (I used to work for Queensland Transport)...I think that on top of this, we should be testing the capability of the driver on the road by giving them a practical test every year or 2.

This is very true!! The rules have changed since we got our licences! Maybe we should get a petition going to present to Queensland Transport!

Oh yeah, I think that they should definitely be doing practical testing. That is what I was thinking of. I guess they could introduce just a written test at 65 or something and then mandatory practical testing later. The written testing should be done as road rules can change a lot in the 50 or so years since they got their license.

Things are different all over the world, I know that some of the older people in my area, are constricted in their licenses to be driving in excess of a certain speed, no matter what the posted limit. The same may apply where you are, though it seems you would know if that was the case.
Aside from that, I think too many people stress out over the silliest of things, the worst that will happen, from being stuck behind a slow driver is you will be a few minutes late, and when driving it is always good to give you self time for uncooperative traffic.
Sincerely and With Appreciation.

This is true although I don't see why people need to do 20-30km under the speed limit!

I have heard of people on the interstate here in California getting tickets from going too slow when they are going the speed limit, though it is hearsay so I do not know if they were in the fast lanes when they were caught.
I have more a beef with those who think good driving is reckless driving, going over the speed limit when others are obeying the law. Or thinking tailgating (riding the bumper of a slower driver) is perfectly acceptable, or exceeding the speed limit when the light turns yellow.
And if one is in an area with businesses, there is always a first time getting there for everyone. Not everyone a have psychic abilities or Internet access to tell exactly where a business is.
One time I witnessed a car rolling out of a parking lot out to a street. I think a mother was distracted by her child and did not realize she was moving. A car came from the intersection at least one hundred yards away, had amble time to see the situation, but guess what he did? He did not even slow down. In fact, he accelerated and swerved around the rolling car, blasting his horn. There were no vehicles behind him, and he could not slow down, or stop if necessary.
What she did was careless. What he did was reckless.
Driving slowly in lanes meant for faster moving vehicles is the only slower driving recklessness that I can think of. Anything else is just excuses from people who lack the patience to be behind the wheel in public streets.

I totally agree! There is a fine line between people being impatient & slow-driving-recklessness...Why can't everyone just obey the road rules then we would ALL be happy
