Anyone who has ever watched snooker on the television will realise that Alex was the bad boy of snooker...and it was great! He WAS and IS the greatest snooker player of all time and people like Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan would not be around if it wasn't for him.
The best moment ever was Alex winning the 1982 World Snooker Championship - ironically against his mate Jimmy White. Unfortunately, Alex's life went downhill from there on in. Drinking, not being able to handle the fame; everything conspired against him really. He still remained the Belfast Boy and was discovered dead in a Sheltered Housing flat in Belfast a couple of days ago, penniless and only 61 years of age. He had been suffering from throat cancer for at least 10 years and Jimmy White has said that he "starved himself to death." I've no idea if this is being sensationalist as Alex has always been thin but it begs the question, "why didn't anyone bother about Alex when he was alive?" I suspect Paul Gascoigne will be dead within 10 years himself if something isn't done to "save him" from self-destructing, then the same people will come out of the woodwork saying what a "great bloke he WAS" instead of "IS".
All this is very sad but at least Alex has left a snooker legacy. He brought excitement to the game that was never there before and I don't think has ever been fully recaptured by the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan, no matter how hard he tries!
Whatever people may think of him I like to remember his snooker, thanks. Some of his shots were nothing short of amazing!
RIP Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, a true genius.
