Catalonia, Spain has banned bullfighting for humane reasons. It's not the whole country but it's at least a start. Here is the story: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hoSaaIUwsevwg2RB34sY8mHh7tNAD9H82A704 I remember my horror when my high school Spanish teacher was telling us about a bullfight she attended in Spain and she showed us an ear the matador threw to her. Her tale upset me more and more as she talked and I finally burst into tears at the horrible torture she was describing with so much admiration. I never liked her after that, I thought she must be a monster of some sort. Does this news make you happy? I'm so glad that something like this has begun!

I think it's fantastic news. a country cannot claim to be civilised if it allows animal cruelty in the name of entertainment. so well done Catalonia. let's hope that the rest of Spain follows this example, so that Spain will eventually be able to consider themselves a civilised country.

I agree with you! Here in the States we are not civilized. We permit dog and chicken fighting because we refuse to pass firm laws to prosecute the sick people who stage those fights. One of our prominent football players, Michael Vicks, was convicted and only spend less than 2 years (I think) in prison then the team took him back--what a horrible message that sends to our young people! You can be evil and cruel and be welcomed back into the fold. Yes, to people that will ask, I DO think he should suffer for life for that cruelty towards innocent creatures. I hope we can follow Spain's example and start to work on our own sadly ineffective laws.

I have to admit, when we finally banned foxhunting, I thought it was a long overdue law. people still do it, but at least they are criminals, and can't claim that they are morally or legally in the right to do so. officially they are breaking the law, as should anyone that abuses animals for fun.

I never understood how several people on horseback with hunting dogs against one small, beautiful fox could be considered "sport". But I also understand that it is hard to let go of traditions, especially one so visually spectacular as fox hunting. I was happy when I saw it was now against the law and that was a few years ago, I think. Good on the British!

Hiya dragon, I hear you and agree this is what I hope is the beginning of the end of this useless cruelty to those animals. I hope the only Bullfighters left are the ones that bullfight motorbikes like in the Red Bull advert. I live in Spain and I don´t like Bullfighting either. Many times I have watched the Running of The Bulls and wanted to go and loose them all out after. Not very practical from my part but my wish was never granted. I used to live in the very same square that was where the Bulls came out of the Pen just behind our House. Then it was San Fermines real one. We used to have the Square full of Japanese People taking Photos of the Bulls and it´s surroundings. Now you don´t see many Japanese People at all it´s such a shame they have ruined San Fermines as such because it´s not just about the Running of the Bulls itself it´s about the Saint of this City. I am sure that the Saint of this City would not want animals to be killed in his name. Besides most of the People in the Bullring are half drunk and they don´t take much notice anyway I know this because I have been there and seen it so many times. So surely they could spare their lives and put on some other kind of activity that does´nt include killing these magnificent animals off?

I recently saw an article about an 8 year old bullfighter. I was sad that his father wasted the boy's talents of speed, concentration and agility on such a cruel and useless sport. The boy has been injured several times. That boy should be taken away from such a monster. Are any bulls hurt during the running? I hope not. So many of our holy ceremonies have been perverted into sensationalism for the enjoyment of the masses. Our American Christmas and Easter are just two of them. I'm sad to hear the the Running of the Bulls has been, too.

Both my grandfathers raised cattle and yes, they are magnificent! They are also intelligent and loving, which makes bull running and bull fighting all the more despicable.

Hiya dragon, Yes I have seen that little Boy too but he is convinced that that is his career and he says that he loves and honours his Father so it´s the way things go. The Bulls do slip on the pavement as they make them run up to the Bullring but mainly the Bulls are much stronger that what they were as they are given more exercise sort of like taking a Dog for a walk so they don´t usually have much trouble getting up. This is Roman style for me what they do the Bulls give them the enjoyment of running with them and then they kill them in the afternoon. Sorry but that´s what they do and I hate what they do but I don´t pull the strings I wish I did none of this would be happening. If you could see them here wild in the Fields like we have you would just be holding your breath as they are so wonderful to watch. I´ve managed to take a few photos not very good ones as the Fields where they are have got a lot of Bushes and high fences so it´s not very easy to capture them properly. However I did get one quite by surprise as we were driving by she was feeding her calf right there on the spot. Someday sometime this will all be over and Bullfighters will no longer exist as such.

I've never seen the "sport" in bull fighting - I feel the same way about rodeo riding. Yet I am a supporter of fox hunting. Call me hypocritical because I am. Funny old thing the mind.....

Hiya dragon, Now I did´nt know that about the "bucking Broncos" and what they do to them. That is cruel also. But they let them loose again after? Whereas here they are killed in that cruel manner. They just don´t stand a chance from the start and they have every right to defend themselves so when I see a Bullfighter fly through the air well I only cheer when I am at Home not in a Bar as it´s not the done thing here. This is Bullfighting Country this side of Spain. Yes I think if the Bullfighters and those who ride the Broncos in such a way were subjected to the same treatment they would be howling with pain to be sure they would. Although I don´t wish that on anyone.

I love all animals and I hate any kind of animal cruelty! When I heard this news story on Sky News I thought it was absolutely brillient. It's my hope that other states in Spain will follow suit and that bull fighting will be banned completely. Some of the images they show can be quite graphic and the poor bull is suffering what with having spears thrown into its back and so forth. I just cannot understand the mentality whereby some people gain so much pleasure in watching a bull suffer! I'm sure those people would not like to take the place of the bull and have other people throw spears at them, they should be forced into this actually. Andrew

Oh, I agree! Anyone who enjoys seeing an animal suffer should have the same thing done to them. I can't even conceive of the sickness that must be in people like that, they must not even be human. Here in the U.S. people fight chickens and dogs and it is illegal but many times the cops look the other way. People who enjoy seeing animals hurt and fighting people or each other should be ostracized from society on an island with no animals.

I am ecstatic about this as I have visited a resort called Calella (near Barcelona) many years ago and a bullfight was shown on television in a bar me and my friend went in. The young lads behind the bar could tell we were upset (and were obviously uncomfortable about having to screen it in the first place) so they turned it off. I think the young - in particular, find bull-fighting abhorrent. However, I think the likes of Madrid won't ban it anytime soon. I visited Real Madrid's ground a few years ago and I reckon more people went to the local bull-ring the following night. I never went of course, I find the whole practise barbaric in the extreme. Barcelona is definitely on the list of places to visit from now on!

In the article I cited, there are apparently many like your bartender because the "fights" were not well attended. I would like to see it a crime all around the world to be cruel to an animal. Of course, the law against being cruel to humans rarely works so I guess animals are out of luck until more of us embrace true civilization.

I'm glad too. It was a total Barbary to kill those bulls in front of a crowd. Like we were in the middle ages not in 21 st century.

Yes, it's encouraging that some part of our world is becoming civilized. In most other parts the mobs must have their circus just as in ancient Rome before their fall--whether it's a political mud-slinging battle, a cage wrestling show, a reality show that humiliates people, the mobs must have their entertainment in which someone suffers. Sad. That's why it's so gratifying to see one part of the world embrace goodness.

"torture for sport" is a good description of it. People have said that the bullfighters are brave but they have people stab the bull many times before they finally put it out of its misery. To me, the whole thing is a great example of cowardice and cruelty. I'm really glad that at least one place has banned it!
