Mental Health: Mental Hospitals

United States

Okay, I was sick of some of the topics on mylot, so I am throwing a random and unique discussion out there: Has anyone ever been in a mental hospital? Was in voluntary? What did you learn from your experience? How did you feel about being in a mental hospital? I went to one recently, it was voluntary, and I learned a lot. For the record, mental hospitals are not as bad as everyone thinks they are, and they can be very helpful. Most people still have hang ups and stigmas about mental hospitals, but they are not what they used to be and in fact many of them are almost like resorts.

You are so right! Mental hospitals aren't bad at all. I visited a friend who had had a mental breakdown and put herself in a mental hospital. Later, I worked with a man who lived in a mental hospital permanently, but who could go out each day to perform a job. In both cases, I was impressed by the inmates (for want of a better word) who really weren't any different from me! That is, you would never think of them as insane! In fact, I was rather jealous. They had a nice life with good company and no worries. They were definitely happier than I was! I wouldn't mind being declared insane at all! And, just like in the movies, it was the doctors that I mistrusted. They didn't seem normal.

Actually, I purposely avoided using the word "patient" because that implies that these people are sick, when in reality they are not. They just have a small problem or two. I should have said "residents". Apart from the "needed" toiletries and so on, most hospitals have computers and internet, TV and indoor sports facilities for the residents to enjoy.

I don't have any experience with mental hospitals at all. I have of course heard terrible stories about them. I'm glad there are some that are so good and not like what I thought about them.

Many people have that common belief about mental hospitals, but they really aren't all that bad.

You must be joking! THERE IS NO FREEDOM! and all they do is STICK NEEDLES INTO YOU! People who go there, end up returning. There needs to be a revolution in the mental health world; people under a lot of distress should NOT BE LOCKED UP! They need to be listened to, and they need to be loved. This is what most of these people are missing, L-O-V-E. Mental Hospitals should be shut down. But don't worry, all things that are wrong will one day be made right. SO, all that mental nonsense will come to an end one day!

I have never been to a mental hospital voluntary or involuntarily. I don't know anybody who has been to one either. I am surprised to find out that they are not really a bad place where people are mistreated. That is what I really thought about them. Have a great day.

Mental hospitals are not as bad as everyone thinks they are, and people do not get always get mistreated. I have heard of some mental hospitals where patients are mistreated, but nowadays, that is very rare. Today, they really are like resorts.
