The Perfect Blog Recipe...?

July 28, 2010 6:13pm CST
So I've been blogging on and off for a handful of months now, and it's really not going anywhere in terms of ad sense revenue and traffic. I think the main reasons for this are a reluctance to marginalize the blog into a niche, it swings between crazy personal stuff and politics, and also perhaps a lack of business-savvy knowledge? I don't know. Anyway, is there anybody out there who has had a relatively succesfull time with their blogging and could maybe share some pointers? Or, if you're on blogger, just post up a link to your site and I'll check it out and maybe comment, or whatever - build some link love :) I might as well shamelessly self promote my own, which is at www.letitbehid.blogspot.com ;)

I have several blogs and what I've found is that having a specific niche is important . . . but if you use specific keywords in several blog posts, you can still get good traffic. Other things that have worked well for me include: - Social networking (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) - Social bookmarking (Reddit, delicious, etc.) - Article marketing - Commenting on other people's blogs Hope that helps! Here's one of my more successful blogs: http://athomemomblog.com

Great stuff - I love the blog, it looks highly professional. I've also had some success with those social bookmarking sites, but my luck seems to really fluctuate. Ah well! Although I'm not a mom, I still appreciate the content, and I like how it's all interlinked with other ventures.

You do need to find some sort of niche, I feel. Cooking blogs always seem to be popular and easy to promote. I recommend trying to figure out what the issues you deal with most in your blog are, and run with it. Mostly politics? Personal stuff related to being a student, parent, living economically, etc? Figure out the words that best encompass your topics. Then look for different groups where you can promote it - facebook, livejournal - anything where you can search by interest and post freely. Best of luck :)

I haven't tried livejournal I might check that out, and yeah Facebook is always a good place to start. It's reassuring that specificity isn't absolutely necessary, I guess I'll just keep blogging about what really interests me :) Thanks very much for your informative response.

My computer skills also leave something to be desired, and I must say that I find a great deal of advice being offloaded by gurus on the internet to be sometimes verging slightly on the incredible, such as these 'omg i made a million dollars in three hours' schemes which no doubt are viewed with skepticism by most of the online community. However, I'm sure that if we keep at it, we'll see good things happen in the near future- or maybe the not so near future...
