PS3 reading other formats?

Hi does anyone know how to read other media formats with the PS3 without actually having to install an Operating System like Linux? I would like to read other types of video files like rmvb, flv and so on, but it can't read any of those, can someone please help me and possibly other people who have this problem? I'd really appreciate it.
