Why do friends compete with each other ?

I have group of girlfriends and we are very close with each other. The only problem is that we can't help competing with each other. Be it career related , boys , or who is the most successful. Though I know its just a natural behavior. I still feel bad about it. These problem sometimes lead us to back stab each other . I love my friends to death. But how can we avoid this kind of issues? Just a point to ponder..

Like you say I think its a natural response just like siblings do it. If you feel bad about it just try to be more attentive to your behavior so that you can catch yourself before it becomes a problem.

Funny you should post this as a discussion, a group of us were discussing this the other day and well it was unanimous that this happens to occur more with our female friends more so than our male friends. Either that or men just do not express their feelings towards this vocally.
One of the responses in our group was that it was not so much a competitory response but more of an unintentional envy whereas the other person would like to be like the other.
It sort of made sense, but in my opinion it surfaces to being competition.
