Writing Content "Farms"...Huh?

On PBS, they're featuring a week-long series about content mills such as Demand and Examiner. It's not slanderous from what I could see but for someone who just writes whatever, it can eventually defeat the purpose as opposed to someone who may consider themselves a foodie or sports fanatic. Everyone has different reasons for writing and I am no one to say you are wrong for writing. Did anyone see this on TV? What did you think and will this affect your relationship with content companies? Here is a link if you missed it - http://video.yahoo.com/watch/7966297/21102200

I liked what they said. I write for Examiner.com, bot because I'm going to get rich it's just a nice way to bring about the development of the disability community in Western Mass and encourage people to be interested in disability rights in general. That's why something I'm passionate about. Getting paid (even pocket change) to do that is amazing to me. I will do it for nothing.

I believe that if people are looking to get rich they should go into entertainment, law, medicine or real estate. Writers entertain to an extent but it's a separate call as to whether we want upfront pay, residuals, both or nothing. Best wishes!

I write for some content mills because they're stable and they fill in the blanks when I'm not doing anything else. I don't write for Demand Studios because they are too demanding for the pay. Magazines, books and so on, have held the upper hand for years, but the internet, while it isn't always the best quality, is a viable market for anyone who wants to write. It pays my bills, what else can one ask?

Amen. The way I see it, some print mags are going out of business because they probably spent too much on overhead and the content was either dated or just OK to begin with. Rolling Stone hasn't been about the music for a while and now they're down to a pamphlet. Oh well, back to grazing on the farm.LOL D
