What makes you claustrophobic

I have claustrophobia so I try to avoid situations that I know cause it. I know being in the center of a crowd of people causes it so I try to stay on the outer edge of a crowd. Also being in an elevator but only if it is full, I can handle it if there are only a few people in it. What situations do you find trigger your claustrophobia?

I've read about claustrophobia before. Its a fear of being closed in or being trapped. It seems that you have a fear of restriction as you try to avoid crowded areas. I'm find this topic interesting. May I know what's on your mind when you're in those kind of situations, is it hard to breath or are you always thinking of the exits. I'm sorry if I'm asking to many questions, as for what do I find that trigger my fear of being closed in is actually being closed in like being in small space where I know its not possible to escape (e.g in a coffin underground). Once I have the fear of heights, acrophobia but I've overcome it by ridding roller coasters the scarier the better but maybe my fear of height is not as worse as others. I think you can overcome your fear if you expose yourself to the fear but at less extreme form (not like what I've done). You can just visualize the claustrophobic situations and start form there.

Hi MirandaKay, I too have claustrophobia and the worst places for me are elevators and public rest rooms. The elevator reasons are obvious. If I haven't used a certain rest room before and don't know the type of lock on the door I am reluctant to go in. I'm afraid of not being able to open the lock. This happened to me once and I was really scared by it. If a rest room has a simple hook and eye lock or a simple "push the lever in a notch" lock I am absolutely fine. If it has a more complicated lock I am reluctant to lock the door if I go in.

Not sure i'm really claustrophobic, because im fine in elevators... and i can survive in crowds in open places... but lots of people standing up in a close room? especially if they're moving? i'll get light headed and head for an exit.... About the locks... big room or small.. i have a thing about closing doors i'm not sure will open... especially if its a slam shut door...
