Owls As Pets?

Does anyone in the United States have an owl as a pet? I was wondering as to their health and diet, housing, what kinds of owl, and where I can find law on owning fowl. I am seeking answers because I would LOVE to own an owl or so one day, when I have the room.

I suppose there is, it seems you can have about anything as a pet in US. Tigers, owls, bears, I suppose you could have your own shark if you wanted too, you just need the right license. Or, actually : -they may only be possessed by trained, licensed individuals while being rehabilitated, as foster parents in a rehabilitation facility, as part of a breeding program, for educational purposes, or certain species may be used for falconry in some states (although they rarely make good falconry birds.) Even in these instances, the person licensed to keep the owl does not "own" the bird--the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service retains "stewardship" of the birds so that they may recall them at any time if permit conditions are not being met. Quite sensible, they're wild birds and shouldn't be kept as pet (no matter whether they do so in Harry Potter :-) ). For one, they're nocturnal, so you'd have to be up in the night to spend time with them. They're supposed to be flying around quite a bit to catch their prey, that'll prove difficult in the home of most people. And quite a few of them are endangered. Other points, they look greit in nature, in a home they'll probably be noise, dirty and smelly. Most of them require very specialist diets. Also, they're predators and can be dangerous, they have big talons and beaks and are not afraid to use them. They don't really like being cuddled. It's difficult to find a vetrinary that has a clue about owls, and finding an owl-sitter is probably also quite difficult.

When I say when I have room, I mean when I can have an aviary. Yeah, I'm kind of extreme lol I like the wild and exotic ones. Snakes, arachnids, rats (I know not so exotic...just not well recieved), fish, etc. Thanks for the input! I like the idea of the US Fish and Wildlife Service having stewardship. I'm all for the safety and happiness of animals. Rock on!
