Both my firefox and IE failed to launch. Firefox starts up and then closes down asking for a crash report to be sent. There's no response from IE at all. I tried uninstalling both and reinstall again but I got the same thing each time. What should I do? Is this a virus attack? Must I reinstall my whole OS? Please provide some advice, thanks!

The exact same thing was happening to my computer a few months ago.. Make sure you don't wait too long before doing something about it because for me, it was a virus and completely ruined 2 of my computers. Before saying it's a virus for sure though.. Do a virus scan, if it can get rid of the virus then you won't need to take further action. If that doesn't work, try defragmenting your computer. Your browsers could be crashing because of a slow computer that needs to be defragmented. Do the virus scan and defragmenting in SAFE MODE though, you do this by hitting f8 repeatedly while the computer is starting up, then select safe mode. None of those options worked for me. My dad actually works with computers, he had to re install my whole OS. Hopefully that's not the case for you! Good luck though!

I'm not too sure whether it's really a virus because my computer is still operating at the normal speed, all other programs are working fine and it's just the internet browsers. It seems that the PC is susceptible to so many sources of harm that I have explore each option and try to find the root of the problem. Thanks for the advice.

Yea it sounds like what was going on with mine as well. Only internet browsers weren't working. You could also bring your computer into someone to fix it if you can't find the solution. But virus scanning in safe mode is the most important thing first.

It could be a virus attack, but it could also be due to OS corruption. Either cause, you might want to try System Restore or Repair your Computer, to restore your computer to a previous time (choose the date when your computer is working perfectly fine), or try completely uninstalling and reinstalling both browsers, be sure that no folders exist in program files when you uninstall. If this didn't work, then I'm afraid you really have to reinstall your OS completely. Goodluck! Hope this helps! :)

You can access the System Restore via Start All Programs Accessories System Tools. That is, if you are using Windows XP. Now if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can just type it in the search bar from the Windows logo in the task bar.

hi missed this one wow both browsers. I would run a virus scan if you have a good anti virus program. I have never had both fail to run. could you go back and reset to before you had this, no without a browser that would be impossible I guess. can you get into firefox help if so they always have helped me when something goes wrong. hey just a thought check to see if you are on the net, if you use cable you may have to reset the modem, pull out the smallest wire in the back wait one minute then plug back in, if you have a router, now wait one minute, pull out the thinnest wire, wait one minute and plug back in. now check if you are on the net both browsers should work, you have to be connected to the net to use 'browsers, I bet you were not.

Hi bluemoon The easiest and sure shot way to get things right and working again is to format the C Drive - where the Operating system is installed and then Re-Installing the Operating system and other software. However it can be expensive if - 1. you are unaware of how to do this 2. your Computer is not under warranty and they do charge extra for re-installation So here is what you can do to satisfy yourself - 1. Try scanning the computer with the Anti Virus that you have. If you do not have the only option is above. If it works then its all very good. if it doesnt then go to 2 2. Try to use some Registry Cleaner if you have. 3. Un-Install Firefox and IE using Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs 4. Re-Install them Hope it works

Of course you can. Most Operating Systems Installers allow you to select from various options. But there are some branded systems that are shipped with their versions which may not allow you to keep the partitions untouched. So better consult the seller first - in order to be safe!

Thanks, I found out it is possible to reformat just one partition. Mine was not a branded system but a system built from the scratch.

I tried suggestions (1) and (3) already which do not work. I wish to avoid reformatting my C Drive so I thought of asking for help here at mylot first Btw, I have partitions in my hard disk, can I just reformat my C:Drive without touching the others? Thanks again.

If your computer is very slow and you cannot open EI and Firefox then just run the AntiVirus , or if you have Malwarebytes (free) run it . If ever you don't have virus at all you can download Firefox or Flock or Opera as your Browser. You don't need to clean install your OS if you can use your computer, but if you cannot even open programs or browser then you are obligated to Reinstall your OS. Good luck.

My computer speed is fine and everything else is running smoothly, I ran the antivirus and it shows some virus which I have tried to purge. I suspect there are still viruses out there which could not be detected or removed, maybe that's what is causing the problem.

You didn't specify if you also tried MALWAREBYTES. You just said you scanned using an anti virus. Try that too, it might be a malware. Nobody suggested a system restore yet, it is very advisable to do it if your scan for malware turns empty. That should do it. Don't reformat yet, that's always the last and final option.

I was not aware of malwarebytes, oohh...I have learnt something new yet again. I just did a search on that. Luckily I have a netbook to download all these software for repairing my PC. Thanks! I was hesitant about reformatting my PC too.

Have you recently installed new software? If you have, use your antivirus to scan for virus/spyware/other bad things. Do your other programs launch? If they don't then you may be in big trouble! :)

All my other applications are working perfectly, I can even log into my msn which means that internet connection is good, just not the browsers
