Hi antilove, Happy to see that you are also a teacher. In my experience as a Teacher, I have always found that Motivating students to study is the toughest part. And when it is about kids, the stakes are higher. As you have not mentioned where and whom do you teach, it would be difficult to give you a proper suggestion. But you can always try out this - Explain why learning Any Language and then English is essential. The students must realize the importance of learning a language and if English is a foreign language, then they have to realize its importance too. Then bring out some creativity in imparting your training and make the class more interactive. You can try out enacting some plays (if you teach them) or even organize some sessions where the students get a chance to do some research and present it.... Things like these would definitely help you out... But as I mentioned, I could give you better and pinpointed options if you just could let me know whom and where do you teach. Hope this helps somewhat.

Hi thesids, Thank you much for sharing your experience in teaching. Your ideas seem to be quite effective. I'm teaching high school students in an Asian country.

In that case, you can get the students into playing out one of the topics in drama. I think you will have a small chapter with a drama/conversation in the syllabus. This way they would feel a part of the play and also try to out-play their other classmates. Increase the competitiveness. Then you can take them out somewhere during the poetry section and bring them closer to the nature - I am sure you would have a poem from WordsWorth for that. (hope I did not get the names wrong, It is already been ages that I am away with English Study)

Hi thesids, thanks a lot for your enthusiasm ^^. Very practical suggestions. I sometimes give my students some role plays, they seem very interested in. Okay, I will try some poems then.^^

Try using more visual stimuli and alternative methods. My english class are studying Hamlet this year and as an introduction our teacher let us watch the simpsons version which everyone enjoyed. there was also this thing called a "themed register" that my old english/form tutor used to do. When taking role call ask a question about the current topic and instead of having students simply answer their names with a 'yes' they answer with their interpretations. This can also be used to create unity in the class by asking questions about the studetns, such as what tattoo they might get when older and why. this helps everyone get to know eachother and feel more comfortable which makes group work a lot more productive and encourages students to help eachother. Hope i helped Birdie

Thanks you for sharing! It's nice to use some visual aids during the lectures, such as movies, music, or pictures. I often apply this method in my class and find it really effective. However, it takes teachers a great amount of time to prepare the lessons well. I will think more about "theme register". It sounds great to get students involved in group work. Your suggestion is very helpful.^^

Being a student myself I know that I like a teacher who can add a bit of comedy to the lectures without losing the objective of the class. Sometimes there are students who shouldn't really be in your lectures they're the ones that don't take their work seriously and/or don't have a passion for what they're studying and you'll either have to kick those from class or deal with it. You could also talk to your students and ask for their ideas on how to make the lectures more entertaining and ask what motivates them and read up on these things online as I don't really know how teachers control their students. My classes are full of really good students even if they find the work hard they are still willing to give their best shot and this motivates our teacher to help them even more. So have a chat with your students :)

Wow, very nice suggestions. I also like teachers with humorous manner. Lectures seem to be less serious with funny activities. And chatting with students sounds very interesting. Thanks so much for your sharing!
