This is the first article in a series exploring free and online tools to help you study for the SAT. The Khan Academy has already been covered by PBS, NPR and the SF Chronicle, so there is no need for me to elaborate on how he got involved with online education. It suffices to say that Salman Khan knows math like I know how to breathe. He has dedicated himself to broadcasting his knowledge to the world in small,simple-to-understand videos. Anyone can watch these videos for free. Why It's Helpful-- Keep in mind that Salman Khan began making these videos as a way to remotely tutor some cousins and family friends.Think of him as a older cousin/brother/uncle that you can go to for math help.As a student, all you've got to do is figure out which math concepts you need to reinforce, then click on those videos.Having a video tutor like this allows you to take breaks when you want, and repeat the lesson as many times as you like. You can access these videos at http://KhanAcademy.org (where videos are organized by subject) or his Youtube channel(where he's created video playlists for different subjects).when you can't study for some reason you can't anticipate now. When you plan your study schedule, aim to be done a week or two earlier than needed. That way, you give yourself the ability to adapt your schedule to whatever unexpected problems hat may arise. Salman has created a series of videos hat break down every math problem in the College Board's "Official SAT Study Guide",So,if you have questions on a specific problem, you can find a video that explains it here.Or, you can also see those videos on the Khan Academy's SAT Playlist on Youtube. These videos will also help you identify specific math concepts that you can learn and review with other Khan Academy videos. The Downside-- This type of education is awesome because it gives the student more power to control their learning environment. But, this extra power also brings more responsibility.Imagine how effective your English class would be if every student had a pause button that controlled the teacher. To effectively learn in such a free environment, you've got to manage your time.Yes,Salman gives you all the info you need for SAT Math. But that does not mean that you can learn it all at once.We recommend that you create a study schedule that gives you plenty of time to cover each concept, take a break, and move on to the next one.Expect the unexpected; there will likely be times when you can't study for some reason you can't anticipate now. When you plan your study schedule, aim to be done a week or two earlier than needed. That way, you give yourself the ability to adapt your schedule to whatever unexpected problems that may arise. How You Can Help-- Get the word out! Friend him on Facebook! Tell your teachers and friends about him!Subscribe to his Youtube channel!!The more popular the Khan Academy becomes, the easier it will be for him to get funding to continue his work.
