What's the easiest way to transfer 8mm tapes into WMV (Windows Media Video)

I have about a dozen 8mm tapes with lots of family videos, cars, trips and other fun stuff that I would like to transfer/convert into WMV format.(Some will go on YouTube) But I'm cheap and I don't want to pay a service to do that for me. Do you know of a step-by-step process, including software/hardware and instructions? The 8mm camera is a 90's SONY and I have a more modern digital video camera I bought 2 years ago, Sony also, I think. I want to put these videos into DVD as well before they get ruined.
