Most used baby items?

My nephew will be here in a few months, and I'm looking for gift ideas. What items did you use the most? What about the least? Which items are worth the $ spent, and which were a complete waste of money?

Be sure to include things for the mother - lotions, creams, spa mask, etc. as well as things for the baby. If there are other siblings try and get them a small present too so they won't be so jealous of their new brother getting all the presents!!

Most used items, I would say receiving blankets, and cloth diapers. My daughter went through a ton of receiving blankets (accidents, spitting up, etc), and I used a lot of cloth diapers for putting over my shoulder or on my lap when burping her. Socks, nighties, and booties, too. They go through a lot of those! By the way, I love the pic you have there. My parents raised Saint Bernards when I was growing up, and your pic brings back lots of warm, fuzzy memories for me.

Oops, that was supposed to go under the original poster, but you probably figured that out from the St. Bernard comment, huh!

Thank you! I will make sure I get things for mommy too. We've had my Saint for a little over 2 yrs. She's our first one. Now Saints are my favorite breed of dog! I'd love to have another someday soon.

blue hills - it doesn't really go along, but i liked it!
Bibs! Burpclothes! Any necessities I'm sure would be great! You have to think, so many people get the baby toys and then they have nothing but that and are running out of the really important stuff! I have a few suggestions for you, First: a diaper cake, have you seen these? don't try eatting it okay! hehe This is something that is creative, and helpful to the parents. And we all know the baby needs them right? What you do is get diapers in size 1,2,3. Each size will be a tier in the cake. You also need a lot of ribbon, lots and lots. Then three stuffed animals that goes along with the theme of the nursery. You can also get little odds and ends stuff if you want to fill in the empty spaces of the cake. Okay grab the bag of size 3 diapers and start rolling them up individually very tightly. After you roll one, take a thin piece of ribbon and tie it around the diaper to keep it secure. After rolling six diapers like that take a thick piece of ribbon and tie it around the six diapers put together. Make eight of these. Now moving on to size 2 diapers, do the same thing as before only now you make 6 of the group of six diapers. Set these on top of the size 3 diapers when you are done with them. Moving on to the size one. Do the same thing, only make 4 of the groups now. Set these on top of the size two. Now the diapers should be in the shape of a cake. Use your imagination with the ribbon, little gifts, and the stuffed animals ( I usually place these on top of the size one diapers) to make it look good! It's your creation have fun. My second bit of advice would be to just get some small gifts and a basket and get creative with that! Have fun and I wish you the best! Hope I didn't get to complicated! hehe

What a great idea! I will have to make a diaper cake. I'm sure they will need diapers. That sounds so cute! I hope mine turns out as good as yours sounds (Doubt it though!)

I have 2 children. I got tons of baby shampoo and lotions-enough to last 5 years!!! That is one gift that is great, but unecessary to get more than a bottle or 2. Diapers are a great start. A size 1 is standard because some babies are born too big to use newborn size. A mother will generally have to change the baby on average 8-10 times a day, and well a package of 50 won't last too long. Stay away from buying pacifiers too, as some babies are very picky and so many vary in nipple size and form, and some babies don't even like them! You can never have enough sleepers this time a year, as for the first few months that is all the baby will wear. Another great gift idea for the baby to hang on to for later use is the talking or musical toys. Babies respond well to music and noise once they get a little older and those are great begining learning tools.
