Not proud of our goverment!

I thought when Haiti was hit by that earthquake in Janauary the money we promised had made it there. I don't follow politics like some people so I just found what really is going with he money! It is still stuck in congress! I found this out from a young man going to college here and is from Haiti! a very nice young man who is trying to get more awareness on Haiti and to get money donated to his country! Of course the goverment will take the money and never give it to the people! My friend will give to people who aren't in the goverment and the money he raies will go to were it is needed! I love my country of the USA but when I hear stuff like I have I am not proud to be an American! The USA is a mess!

Blue, I agree. Our country gets more and more shameful. I read that they received a lot of items, but they had nobody to give it to the people. Maybe Michelle Obama with her 8 vacations by the end of the summer would like to do some work before her 4 years are up.

Rose, are you suggesting that Michelle hasn't been involved in anything since becoming the First Lady? Apparently, jb, someone is on a personal mission...which seems to be starting off badly judging by the look of the board today.

is michelle obama the new target? useful. all the ridiculous comparisons with males (hitler, nero, mussolini, attila the hun, stalin,) have been used up on her husband and are getting a bit stale. and there are lots of female ones going spare. so what is michelle?

As I thought this was a situation. I was never donating to the government to them and online. The other people did this really stupid. They need to wake up their eyes. They forgot their suffering life.

As long as it goes through a church and not the goverment it will help the people. I thought the same as you not long ago but I changed my mind after I learnt more about the country and its people. I can't totaly know how bad it is in Haiti unless we live or visit there. From what I know, from a college student who is from Haiti, the Haitians need our help! We don't need people like you bringing the people that need help down!

It has really been a common cliche about the government or shall I say any government. Government isn't that pro people at all. Relatively, majority (if not all) people manning the government are self-centered and they don't care about people they should've been serving. We can't deny that fact and it would always be good to expect more from those people outside of the government. One more case is that, how and what would you feel after knowing that the money you are paying every month only goes to wrong charity center. What goes to reall people who really need is absolutely just a mere LEFTOVER. We are working hard just to pay for their luxurious dinner and party. Just like what you said, we really can't blame ourselves of saying that we are NOT proud about the government we are in. God help us.

God help us is right! We have a goverment like alot of countries do! An uncaring one! No wonder the money suppose to head to Haiti may never get there! I personaly think we the people should not be donating money to the politictions at all! We know they wasted on stuff they don't need like parties and vacations! The US is full of greedy and selfish politictions! Boy do I hate politics!!

I think that this should be a real area of concern right now. Any awfully lot of Americans (Self include) have donated some of their hard earned money in hard times to Haiti. I was listening to Sean Penn's questioning of Wyclef Jean's run for the presidency down there. Normally, I would just pass it off as a wfty movie star questioning a wifty rock star but I was impressed by the amount of unselfish effort Penn put into helping Haiti and I sensed that he was very sincere and holding back on saying anything inflamatory. I think we need to look seriously into where all of our money is going in Haiti. This is a situation where that country could very easily go from the fat to the fire. Whereever there is that kind of money that went into Haiti relief, there are a lot of cons & schemes and the plight of the people means nothing to the con-artists and schemers. This is money that WE donated and we have a right to an accounting.

What I have read on Wyclef Jean,I don't like him! I don't think he can be trusted but that could be wrong! When the earthquake hit Haiti alot of the money that was donated down there was never accounted for! That happens all the time because people think it is safe to send it threw the goverment! It isn't! Just like any other crisis or when around the holidays the con artists and scammers came out of the wood work! Same goes with Haiti's situation! I agree! All the money that WE donated we should have the right to an accounting!

Well now you dont really think the beuracrats in Washington care now do you? The government has a wonderful way of taking something simple and complicating it with red tape. Unless something makes a good photo op for the President or for the congress in general it isnt happening. The governmentt is supposed to be by the people and for the people but anymore its seems like the government is by the government and for the government. People do need to wake up in this country and pay more attention to what is happening with the government what you cited is only one example.

The more I get into responding to your answers on my discussion the more I hate the US goverment! Yes the people of the US never to pay more attention then they are so things get done! Right now the US goverment is not carrying about anything but themselves! It is a crying shame! I hope with work things will change!

Sad but true, the USA is a mess. Unfortunately what you are saying about the money promised to Haiti never finding its way there is the norm. It happens to most of the causes out there. That's why we are seeing so many 'private' citizens taking their money, or contributions straight to the country in need themselves. Unfortunately we all can't afford to do that, and our donations go astray. Take a look at Africa, for instance. If those countries received any or all of what we Americans have contributed to them they would not still be starving! Think about this, only a percentage of what we give actually gets to Africa, and out of that the receiving governments keep most of it for themselves. What do the actual suffering citizenry see? Not a whole lot, you can be sure of that! It's sad but true! What do you think we, as everyday people, can do to change it? Anything?

I've had Haiti so much on my mind I forgot to what has been over to Africa! They have had their share of troubles just like Haiti! I work at a college and we do have some students from Kenya and Malawi. Malawi had a teaching program through the college and both goverments. Now after 10 years Malawi says they can't afford to send dtudents over hear to become teachers and go back after 3 years to teach more teachers. They have so many children who want to learn and adults, too! They were paying for their education, their room and board. Not to mention to take care of their families while they are gone. Malawi ia one of the pooest countires in the world. Unless they get sponsorship from over here the program is no more! With our help Malawi is improving! Here we need to spend more money on our own people but when someone needs help we are expceted to help out even though in some ways we don't! I wish we had a president who could do all he promises, and has no big problems with thw senate and congress! That would be a good start!

Well, with all the help and what not we have already sent there, we don't need to send any more. We sent our troops there and everything. In my opinion that money stuck in congress need to go into the US, not the "war" effort, not to another country but to aid those here in the US that need help. Its very frustrating to see people here go hungry, we waste billions on a "war" that will never be won and yet we spend all this money in other countries. We need to take care of our own.

In some ways I wish the US would leave its money here at home. When you are the welthest nation in the world you are expected to donate tons of money! If we didn't other countries would get angry at us It is just the way it is and it probaly will never change!

That is what I have heard and I believe this infromation is true. I also found out most of the countries who promised money it never made it to the people but was used buy the goverment of Haiti for themselves and the rest of the promised has never showed up!

Congress pretty much always moves slowly though...that's the nature of the beast. I like representative government a lot better than I would a monarch, but hundreds of people make decisions a lot slower than one would! That's why it's so important to support organizations like the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders that are on the ground right after a disaster hits. Besides, governments tend to deal with other governments the most...I bet a lot of the aid to Haiti, once it does go through, will go to keeping the Haitian government up and running and supporting its programs. It's not that that won't help the country, but to really help individuals in need, I think charities are the better option over foreign aid most of the time.

The money we promised Haiti will not go to the people it should go to if we give to their goverment! Sure it wil help their goverment run but Haiti will never get better if the goverment doesn't care about it's people! Obama has not been the bset of presidents,so far, I rather not know what all that ia going on with the US goverment! Less to owrry about and less arugments with people on politics!

My husband's brother's company was slated to help with the rebuilding early on. He was contacted by a congressman or senator (I don't recall which now) and they had several meetings to work out the details of what equipment was going over there and transportation. Originally he and my husband were going to go but, as time dragged on and the threat of disease grew, they decided to stay home since they're both in their 60's. BIL was going to send crews over *but* there was so much red tape and so many delays that it never happened. He moved on to other things. He never specifically said whether the delay was due to our government or theirs but folks definitely were dragging their feet. Looks like they still are and that stinks.

I would not doubt it is the Haitian goverment and the US both dragging thier feet! It is sad to see this happening but this seems to be happening more and more these days! Hopefully this situation will improve with the young man I know from Haiti who is working on getting money and awesome of the bad situation Haiti still is in.

No, not all governments are good governments. Yes, it is true that many rogue governments siphon of aid destined for countries that have suffered natural catastrophes. Happens everywhere. So, let us be aware of these when we start donating money for worthy causes. The best channel is through the churches.

That is what my friend from Haiti will be doing. He was not there when the earthquake happen but he heard accounts from family memembers on what it was like when the earthquake happen and what has been going on since. Of course not alot of good has been going on because the funs aren't there. Hopefully it will change soon!

I agree on the way some governments function, including my own...but then again ask yourself this question...is there any guarantee that the opposition would have managed the affairs in a better way...isn't it disgusting to feel that ONE DOES have a choice in choosing the devil from the deep sea when it comes to voting for a party?..a party that would let you down anyway AFTER being elected....I don't feel proud of being a human in this world...leave alone as a citizen of any country...

Yes if we all could go to Haiti to help out we would see the constant destruction of Haiti. Until then some peole will never understand how bad it is. I have an idesa from a ciollege student from Haiti. He knows the help isn't there and he wants to do something about it. I know he will do it to! This young man is carrying Haiti on his shoulders and won't stop doing it until the work is done!
