First of all, how old is your son? Usually, Retrievers are great with kids, they easily bond and kids love them. I wouldn't suggest small/toy size dogs, they sometimes are annoying and will have a negative effect on the child, they might be annoyed by them and eventually hate them. For a start you can buy Retriever pups.

if you want big and playful dogs, get a Labrador. if you want a small dog, get a shitzu or minipin.

When I hear somebody who wants a dog, an adult rescue dog is the first thing that comes into my mind. But you said you want a puppy to tag along along with your son when they grew together, so that's another story. I hope you know that a puppy will double the trouble in your house, as puppies are boisterous and always full of energy. I sugest you to buy a puppy girl, as female dogs are more careful with children and more attached to the family. As for the breed you should choose, I think any dog, with proper education, can be a child's companion, no matter what breed it is. But (there's a big BUT!) if you are a first time dog owner, don't choose a breed that is difficult to handle (like some large breeds as Rotweiller, Doberman and so on). I'm sure you have some preferences when it comes to 'how the dog looks'. Tell us your preferences, and we will help you make the choice.

If you have a place for the dog and you have time to take care of your dog, such as have a walk with your dog sometimes. Then it is a good idea to have a dog at home. I always think it will have a positive effect on children. They can learn so much from raising a dog. And I am sure your son will be so happy to have a dog at home. I love China

We are chihuahua people and have even raised them. BUT - please don't get one for a two year old. I would definitely recommend either a Golden Retriever or a Yellow Lab. My daughter has three young children and they have a Yellow Lab that weighs 100 lbs. and he is the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever seen. He loves the kids, even the two year old and follows them everywhere. I have also heard that the Golden Retriever is a wonderfully gentle dog and very smart. If I had room I would like to have one. If you do decide to get one of these larger breed dogs be aware that it is imperative that you exercise them enough. They need a good long walk every day. I would like to also advise you to try to get a shelter dog. You could look around until you find one with the gentleness and sweetness of a lab or retriever. He/she will make your son a wonderful friend who will be loyal and grateful to have a good loving home. I wish you luck in finding the perfect match. Please let us know what you get and how it is going.

I know that the "right" thing to do is to rescue a dog from the shelter, however.... A dog can live on average 14 years. A two year old child will be 16 by the end of its life, you will have a dog in your house that long as well. Add your current age to 14. Personally I would go for the border collie. If you find a young one at your shelter and he's friendly, go for it. Personally I would go with a good, well respected breeder. I would then go to "Puppy Kindergarten". I would go with all the professional tips and tricks they teach ME! The kind of dedication that will go into this commitment drastically calls for it. p.s. we have three Shar Pei with us for the next 12 years. We are Shar Pei lovers and know most of the breads out there! Have fun!
