Are you rowing the boat of life with one oar or two oars

My husband just shared a story with me that clarified the relationship of faith and works for eternal life. When you are rowing a rowboat you have two oars. One oar is faith, the other oar is works. If you row with one oar, you go around in circles, going nowhere. You must pull on each oar equally to go in a straight line. Where does this lead? The Bible tells us we will get rewards in heaven based on our works.
