Are you rowing the boat of life with one oar or two oars

My husband just shared a story with me that clarified the relationship of faith and works for eternal life. When you are rowing a rowboat you have two oars. One oar is faith, the other oar is works. If you row with one oar, you go around in circles, going nowhere. You must pull on each oar equally to go in a straight line. Where does this lead? The Bible tells us we will get rewards in heaven based on our works. Bible scripture references: Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: We are commanded to lay up treasures in Heaven. 2Jo 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. It is our works that lays up treasures in Heaven. 1 Cor. 9:25 1Co 9:25 1 Thes. 2:19-20 II Tim. 4:7-8II Tim. 4:7-8 1 Peter 5:2-4 1Co 15:58 1Co 3:14 Revelation 2:10 Prosperous mylotting

Hi Pj, I grew up with the motto Ora et Labora meaning prayer and work. This is actually the message sent to us when Martha complained why Mary was just sitting beside Jesus, listening to His preachings. Our Lord emphasized that prayer and work are both essential in living our faith.

I do believe that faith in God is nothing if we don't work for it or doing good things in life. You're right, in order to achieve eternal life, these two must be balanced. We will not be rewarded just by believing, we should work for it to gain these reward.

Herro vhings_88 Faith in God (Jesus), salvation (relationship with Jesus) is the key to heaven. Our works relate to the rewards (some say crowns) we will get in heaven. Remember our boat has two oars. God bless you Prosperous mylotting

Well there are days when I feel like I am up the creek without a paddle. Then I have days that I think I am rowing that boat around and around in circles, and I am sure that is when I have only one oar. Then there are days when life goes well, and I know then that I have both oars in the water. So yeah life is like rowing a boat.

Herro pmbhuntress09 I appreciate your sharing how your boat is unstable. When we have a relationship with Jesus, he helps keep our boat stable. One of the oars is faith, the other oar is works. With both, our boat will move in a straight line. God bless you Prosperous mylotting
