I just read an article about a couple that lives with just 100 personal items. They have no TV or cars. The inspiration for this was a website (article didn't mention website) that challenges people to whittle down to just 100 personal items. The theory is that more is not always good and materials things don't bring happines. Although, lack of could. So, could you get down to just 100 personal items to live your daily lives? What kinds of things would you keep, get rid of?

We've done it before, My hubby and I started our life together with virtually nothing, and we didn't have much money. We can afford only our important needs, like food, cooker, electricity, gas for cooking, a bed with beddings and we didn't have tap water, we had one that we have to use our hands to pump water out, buckets, some useful tools to make the house. An electric fan. We mainly stayed outside the house to garden and do some outside work for the new house. We built our house from scratch. We painted it ourselves, little by little our home shaped into a livable place. We could have had a nice house to live in quickly at that time but we had to be in debt to do that. So, doing things little by little and having small amount of things in your home will really help you a lot in not being in debt, so right now, after 9yrs. We are ok, and living a good life, built ourselves 2 houses, and we can buy our appliances and other things we wanted because we had it small before. And yes, it was a good thing to start from small, you can be humbled by the things you achieved without spending too much. I understand that the couple you read about did what they did because they are in debt, they are right in doing that, to start a fresh and clear of debt is better than having so many things but imprisoned with worries and tensions on how to afford to pay for a debt, better to live small when you can't afford a big one. Not being in debt is going to give a person a freedom and hassle free life. How about you? Did it happen to you already? Or are you thinking of doing it? Just like the couple you read about, we can now, go for our holidays and give help to our family cause we saved. Good luck.

Wow Ruth, I admire you and your husband. What a great way to start out. You also have the right to say "we did it ourselves". I myself have very little debt from material things, mine is all medical bills. I can live with only food, shelter, bed and my computer. I think I could easily live with only 100 items.

Thank you both, Well, My hubby and I believe in starting small and build from there. We are fortunate of not giving too much attention to what other people think we should have done or have. What make us happy is that we have a good, happy life despite of the things we don't have. We didn't look at our glass half empty but half full! It's a power of love, yes, you are right nagischan. I'm a very simple person, I don't even believe in buying too expensive things even if I can afford it cause I know that after a few weeks or when the excitement leave me, then those things are just going to sit there, what a waist. We go to big shopping mall I look and admire but don't really have the need to buy. I wish that a lot of people can do that, because buying things you don't really need will put you and the family in big debt. And we like to give to people when they need help, like if we have clothes and appliances or anything we don't use anymore, we give them away, so things don't accumulate, at the same time, we helped someone. I'm stingy too to myself, than to buy something for me, I'll buy and give to someone else. It seems strange to people who knows us but at the same time they seem to understand. K15682, Yes, if we just want too we can. I don't even have to have a computer. The work inside and outside the house will get me through and some books. A radio is a must though, cause we need to hear of what's going on around us, most especially when there's a storm, and there's no electricity. Right now, our live is good and I think it's because we worked very hard to build and have the things we have. Now, we can go traveling and help more people around us. A very nice feeling... A freedom..

i can not image this if i was in that condition. also i can not count which items i need ,which do not need, cause a lot of small items you will need if you really get rid of them. with the high tech development, people are thinking how to improve the efficiency and save energy.so i think sometimes some specific items will help you a lot. maybe 100 items are enough for someone ,so ,i must say this depends on people...

Hi, maomao...yeah, it depends on the person and it's situation, just like the couple in the news, it's because they filled with debt and want to be free of it, because perhaps, it's already encroaching in their life and makes them miserable, so, it's only good to find ways on how to make your life better though for other people it seems odd to be down grading, in this situation, that's all one can do,most especially when economy is hard and not much job to have. It's not for everybody but it's the safe way to get to a freedom that people want to go to, free of debt. It doesn't need to be only 100 items, just knowing your situation and doing something to improve it.

I probably won't be able to live with that. I think it would take a lot of courage, and discipline for people who opted to just own 100 things, nothing more and nothing less. For an average person like us, i think we have a thousand things for us alone, not including the stuffs we have in our kitchen, our closets, the little extras in our bags...

It would be interesting to attempt it just to find out what would be important enough to keep. My computer hs to be at the top of my list lol.

I'm a packrat by nature; so I could never do that. Also, I'm very frugal; so I want to get something for my things and in these times I need to get something for them if I get of them.

I agree with you, if it will sell then make some money. If it doesn't sell I toss it. I learned a long time ago that material things don't make me happy.

I am not sure if I could do this. I will say that I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff though. Some I sold and most I donated. It does feel good to get rid of stuff you do not need and to lighten the load. I do not even miss the things I got rid of.

I figure if I haven't used it in 6 months, I must not need it! My husband on the other hand, figures if he might need it in the next 20 years...SAVE IT!

LOL, you really are a packrat. Still have toys from childhood, although there could be sentimental reasons for keeping them.

I wouldnt be able to. I just have to many things that i think i would need. I am however suprised that they pulled that off, and also happy that they are trying to be happy by using different but (at least for me ) extreme methods. In one way it is a way of reducing their expenses letting them save up for some future trip or something to blow off steam and relax and even have fun.

I can live with my tv, computer, cellphone, aircondition, fridge, dvd player, and that's about it. The 94 other items, i'd have to think of them.
