When is a question deemed stupid? Or are all questions stupid by nature?

I like to ask questions. And if the answers to those questions I asked did not clarify by doubts or queries, I ask more questions. And in the event those answers I get still do not clarify my doubts, I ask some more. This is so that I can understand something which I am asking about. In some recent dealing with some unpleasant people, I have kept quiet for the beginning part as I am trying to learn or grasp the concept of what I am about to learn. And if I jump right in to ask questions without reading up much, I may be asking questions that may already be explained in the book. And then I got this from that unpleasant person "How come you are so quiet? Don't you have any questions to ask? You must ask more questions in order to understand more or to clarify your doubts." SO okay... I finally finished reading the book and started to ask questions. And this is what that same unpleasant person said "Why are you asking such stupid questions?" "But I do not understand what I read cos what I see is not the same thing as described in the book you passed to me." "Well, stop asking, those are all stupid questions!" DUH~~~~~! If I do not understand, I ask. And when I ask, they are deemed stupid questions. And when I do not ask, I get chided for not asking questions. SO tell me, is there such a thing as a SMART question? or are all questions stupid by nature?

I don't know. Really... Because I have been a victim of this scenario before and I am offended as well because I have the same doubt as you. "Why my question has been labelled as stupid?" Regardless it is stupid or not, if the person has deemed it to be stupid, that means the person already have the answer to it. So it's a big "question mark" why can't he bother to answer it? Is it by chance your lecturer or supervisor? Everyone has different level of interpretation capability. It's because we don't understand that's why we asked. No question should be deemed stupid. Even if you asked the a mathematician what is the answer to 1+1? It is not necessary 2. Because the mathematician will still have to ask more question such as whether the equation is for what purpose etc then he will be able to provide a confident answer. A smart question is having a question because it shows we don't know and we want to know the answer.

ahgong, In the first place, if the person is being clear as crystal and beyond any doubt - there would not be any questions at all in the first place. You did not do anything wrong or detrimental to deserve such an audacious response which I am sure that you aren't the culprit for the lack of understanding or clarity. There will always be obscured or dense in the heads and yours is no exception - I'd say walk away and look for a more qualified intellect where the one you are asking the questions obviously isn't one.

to me, a stupid question is one asked by someone who obviously know the answer. or when the answer is so obvious that no one could possible not know. i guess people just get rubbed the wrong way by various things. maybe the unpleasant person doesn't know the answer but doesn't want to lose face either. therefore he/she just brush you off in such manner.

When the question can be answered by simply observing, then it is a stupid question. It's the kind of question you should keep in your head. Like when you're putting getting dressed in your work clothes, and you grab your keys, and then someone asks you if you're going to work. Hmmmm. What do you think? Or you're eating some food, and someone asks you if you've eat'n yet. Hmmm.

Here's a stupid question: "What do you think is the answer when you add one to one when it's two?", "What direction is forward?", "Why do you think black and white has no color when black and white are in fact colors?"

hahahahaha =D Poor ahgong!! Ask questions, he not happy, and when u dun ask, he said why are u so quiet.. lol =D Contradicting right?? That's what many of us are facing.. The actual problem does not lie with us, but rather the person teaching or talking.. By asking this "Any questions from anybody", is just surface work, to make them look good.. But when one really ask, then they will say refer to whatever information is being given, it's all stated in it.. So u see, it's not a matter of stupid or SMART question, but the sincerity of the person, whether they are interested in sharing more with us or not.. lol =D

I was always told that there never was stupid question because it's probably one that everyone wanted to ask but was too afraid to ask it. It's okay to be doubtful. Questions arise because we don't understand something and just because one person understood and you didn't doesn't give that person the right to say that your question was a stupid question. He or she may not have seen it in the same way you did and so there for you have more questions than him or her. We went through and done a psychological profile on Forrest Gump. They kept saying he was stupid. As it turned out we found out there were like 10 different levels of intelligent and because forrest gump kept asking the question why or what was that or who is that or where is or how do I do this he was intelligent because he kept asking questions to learn himself how to do do something better. That in itself is intelligent. So keep on asking questions. If they keep bothering you then you need to tell them that the fact they are not asking questions could possibly be a sign of stupidity in itself because if they read it all the way there should be at least a few questions from each person. My mom reads books all the time. She likes Nora Roberts and she has recently been doing them on Cd and cassette tape and she has been catching things that she hadn't before and some of these books she has read at least twice
