My insurance rates went up!

I understood why they increased last year because I had emergency surgery. My premium went from $160 to $190 but was still cheaper than anything else I could get. I got notice last month that it's now $219. I hear that almost every health insurance company is raising their rates in anticipation of higher costs once the new healthcare (actually it is insurance reform) laws take place. Have your rates gone up lately? Even though I have insurance that meets my needs I find the extra $29 a month to be burdensome. How about you?

Hiya dragon, That would be a burden for me too we don´t use the Hospital or the Emergency Room either unless it´s for something really serious. They are starting to promote Health Insurance Policies here too more than ever before and it seems we will be pretty close to paying high premiums in the not too distant future. I hope not but it does seem that way from what I have heard People say here about what is happening. Glad you are alright that is a very nasty experience my Husband had a grumbling appendix and it made him feel very ill at times.

I hope your husband had his appendix taken out successfully! It was very strange--my son's appendix nearly burst because he didn't present with classic symptoms, just a stomach ache. I had to insist on a white count test, they wanted to send him home! When my appendix went bad, I had the same symptoms--stomachache, no fever, no nausea, no pain. Weird. But at least I knew what it was.

Yes, I guess many friends here are also facing such a similar problem. When the insurance rates have gone up, then we will have to spend much money on burdening the fees. For many people, health insurance is really a necessity during their daily life and work, but for the increasing rates, most of them will consider to look for another choice to meet their needs and ingore the insurance gradually if they really can't afford them.

I see you are new here, welcome to myLot!! Read the rules and you'll have a great time with people from all over the world as you earn some money! Here in the U.S. our government has passed laws that now require everyone to have medical insurance. If we can't afford it we must accept the government plan, which will surely bankrupt the country. We already have millions on government health insurance plans and many hospitals and doctors are refusing to treat them due to the low payments they receive. I would much rather be able to pay my own plan but the ultimate goal is to get everyone on the government plan. Our government has bankrupted our Social Security (retirement) plan, our old age medical care plan and our postal service. I doubt they will do any different with government health insurance. These are dark times and our country is turning into a dictatorship.

There must have been some powerful forces at work in order to ignore REAL reform, like allowing people to buy insurance across state lines and introducing competition between companies. I would be surprised if anyone in DC even knows the definition of common sense.

happily, my insurance is still thru my old job that I'm retired from - and since I'm a single person with only dental insurance extra, it might got up a dollar or few, but it won't be an extra 29...

What a blessing that is! I've never had a job with benefits but luckily I'm able to afford my premiums so far. I would not want to be without insurance. Even with the high premiums, I'm still ahead since they paid most of my appendectomy surgery bills last year--in fact, it'll take years for them to break even with me!

I feel your pain. Sorry to hear your insurance rates have gone up, but I fear you are correct. Prices are going to escalate when insurance is mandated, in addition to rising costs of healthcare. The biggest problem is people who don't have basic insurance and take their runny nose to the ER - now that is one expensive treatment for a cough or cold. Then, they don't pay their bills. Who gets stuck, those with insurance. What happens to our insurance rates, they go through the roof to cover the cost of the uninsured. It is a catch 22, but with a "we see everyone" patients' bill of rights what can be done. Yes, the cash crunch is just about unmanageable. It also causes those who should get treatment right away to postpone illness hoping it will go away because we realize making an insurance claim is going to result in rising rates. (Well, they are inflating regardless, but yes, I see your point - and, obviously, the entire health care and health insurance situation frustrates me.)

When I had my appendix removed last year, I put off going to the ER. I suspected what it was, although I didn't have the classic symptoms. Finally I called the nurse line of my insurance and she told me to go to the urgent care right away. I haven't been to the doctor 4 years before that or even since. I don't use the doctor unless it's serious. I resent those who use the ER as a doctor but I understand why they do it--they can't afford insurance. If people did not expect so much from insurance that would solve some of it. When I was a child insurance was for big things and we paid doctor visits and prescriptions ourselves. Now people expect it to cover all expenses. Insane. They also think that every single sniffle needs a doctor's attention. I'm glad I can still afford insurance. But the rate increase is a hardship, even though I understand why they are doing it.
