If you do, how do you like it? I moved to a new city last year and have been trying to find a way to make new friends. My co-workers are quite a bit older then me and are in a different place in their life so I have searching for ways to make new friends outside of work. I have been looking for a craft circle and I found one not too terribly far from me. I am going to attend next month and see how it goes. Do you belong to a craft circle? Have you in the past? How did you like it. I think it will be a great place to make new friends and possibly learn new crafts.

I've been attending different crafting groups for more than 10 years now. When we moved to a different state I decided that I had to start a group myself because I didn't feel comfortable taking my son with me to the groups that I had found. The group started off very small - which I was happy with because my son was still nursing at the time and wanted to make sure that the members that did come were comfortable with that. I invited members to bring their kids if they had any. One member did have a little girl that was the same age as my son and they got along very well. It was almost as much fun sitting and watching the kids play as it was visiting and knitting/crocheting or whatever craft each member brought with them. The group is now 4 years old this month and it's much larger. None of the members have kids my son's age now, but he is a bit older and does not need constant supervision like at the beginning. I have become good friends with a few of the members and enjoy their company very much. I talk to people all the time about the group and we constantly have new members join us when they can. I would have to say that the one thing that take quite a bit of effort is finding different workshops or projects that we can all enjoy. I usually do the teaching which means that my own projects go on hold for the day, but I always feel a sense of satisfaction afterwards and really enjoy teaching. We play with every craft you can imagine - knit, crochet, beading, scrapbook, stamping, lacemaking... and have learned a lot from each other. Even though our ages vary quite a bit, our love for crafts does not which is why I think we've lasted this long. I've given members the choice to belong to one of the various guilds (CGOA, TKGA, etc) but we decided that we wanted to keep out membership open to all crafts and talents. :-)

Sounds like a very nice group. I have thought of starting my own group because there is nothing really close to where I live. I am going to have to drive a bit to get to the one I am going to attend. If you really enjoy teaching crafts you might see about doing some teaching through a local craft store and get paid a bit for it.

I have a couple members that drive quite far to come out here. It is such a honor to have such die hard crafters seek our humble little group out. :-) They claim that it is worth the drive. :-) I do enjoy teaching and used to teach before my son was born and am starting to get back into teaching again. I just need to work on promoting myself a bit - which always takes time - so that my classes can become a little more popular. :-)

as you know, the sewing club at my church.....we meet the 2nd Tuesday each month from 10 am - 3 pm I always love going, although I wish it were another day besides Tuesday. I have to miss the Bible study that day to go to club, plus we start our bowling leaque soon, so it makes for a very long Tuesday. Marsha

A lot of book clubs and sewing circles in my area are on Tuesday which means I can't go because I am a community college instructor and I teach the night class on Tuesday and Thursday so I am unable to attend those meetings. I wonder why everything is on Tuesday?

No I don't belong to any circle IRL, just a few online ones I mainly ask for advice on and such. I had tried to join the crochet group @ our local rec center but because I have kids (& no child care + they could not allow them to come! ) and my hubby has a complicated schedule I could not join the group. I was quite heartbroken about it, but youtube and groups online have eased that place.

That is cool. I might try to find me a couple of groups online to join too. I would like to do a cross stitch stitch along some day. Sorry you aren't able to go to your local group though. Maybe you can when you children get older.
