David Beckham and Capello - Capello says no more for Beckham in the England team

England coach Fabio Capello has said that he will not pick 35 year old David Beckham to play in any more competitive international matches with the England team. I think that this is very sad for a man who is foiercly patriotic, especially as he found out second hand, I would have thpought that he should have been told first and not headr it from the press. I know he is getting on a bit in years but he does, as I said, hve a lot of patrioism, far more than half the shower who attempted to play for England in the World Cup!! What is your opinion on this?

I think Capello is doing the right thing. No player deserve a place in the squad based purely on their reputation. They have to earn it. I am hoping Capello will do the same with players like Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, etc. Drop them if they are not performing. Those players will be on the toes knowing that unless they give their all, they will be missing the next match. Better than having them thinking that it is a scroll in the park and they will still be selected regardless of their commitment and performance.

When your time is up, it's up. Beckham was a good player, there is no question in that, but now it is time for the England football team to start a new era. I watched the game last night and it shows that there are some good quality young players coming through the ranks, but they need time on the pitch to gain experience, this will take time. Coming from North of the border I was not happy with the results last night , BUT , it was only friendly games.

It made a change to have a win too! I think all the 'players' who travelled to South Africa should have had their marching orders even the Scouse 'God' Gerrard (that was said in a Scouse accent by the way!!)

I agree that the communication should have happened in a better manner to Becks. That's probably what happens when you get Italians to speak English :). But to tell you the truth, the writing was on the wall once he got injured before the world cup that he had played his last for England. May one final exhibition game or something like that!! Cheers! oldchem1, I think he (Beckham) is actually fighting to be back in the national team by not playing the exhibition friendly which the FA and the coach are making it his swansong. This is really riling things up with Beckham's friends, supporters, fans, family and I am not surprised if the rest of the team is being riled as well. Thanks for thatvlink, I had not read that. It was a pretty cruel way to end his time with England, and I can't see as how it will have done much for Capello's popularity( if hehas any) in this country!

oldchem1, I am sad for David Beckham especially the way he's been treated by both coach Fabio and the English FA. I think no one would ever believe in representing such an insensitive country as England. I mean we are talking about players who had done well when duty calls and only to be let down by some poor personnel management. I do not know just what is going through the minds of the national team management team but this is by far the worst and insensitive treatment ever. Even a kindergarten dropout would know how to show gratitude and appreciation for great players like David Beckham who is not only a professional player but a patriot and role model. He really does not deserve this. A player's ability is not handicapped by his age as shown by players like Dino Zoff (Italy) and Roger Milla (Cameroon). Surely, coach Fabio isn't using his brain on this one and the English FA - all of them really deserve a boot in the butt if I may add.

Capello is right. That was not time for beckham,he's already old and i think his performance not too good anymore. And i don't like him.Why ? He's not totally in football world i guess. You can see his performance in commercial product, hollywood celebrities or make other sensation with his wife. Not totally football player. You can compare with Zidane.Very different.

In my opinion, Beckham was just a regular player, who had great crosses and was a good free kick taker, but as a player I didn't like it too much. His luck was that the WC 2002 was held in Asia, and from then he got astonishing contracts, earning far more as he deserved. In my opinion every football player earns too much. I am a great football fan, I love this game very much, but in my opinion football is no longer what it should be: a sport, it is more a business, where there is a lot of money. But we cannot say that is a clean business, because there is no financial fair-play and there is no loyal competition between teams. I say Beckham has took the greatest advantage of this transformation of football. However I cannot say a bad word about Beckham's patriotism, he has always behaved exemplary as many times he was called for England. This is my opinion, you can agree or disagree.

I have to say that I agree that football plaers are paid far too much money, I think the amount of money generally in the game has spoilt it!

I'm not a football watcher, but the last few years for him have been a little sparse, so it's probably better that he goes whilst remembered for his game rather than time spent on the bench. He must have great potential for management or as a commentator. I imagine that he could just take it easy if he wanted. It's an unfortunate trait of modern management- not just in sport- that those affected are often the last to be aware. I don't know where this image came from, but I'm reminded of a reporter interviewing Tariq Aziz, who was stating that the Iraqi military was holding it's ground in the gulf war- as an M1 Abrams rolled into view!

You ae so right about that photograph! I too feel that he has great potential in the management front - but then he is at a big disadvantage - he's English
