Renting a house then and now

My grandparents live next door to a rented house. The house used to be owned by a man who lived there and from what I can remember was a good neighbor. Then he and his family moved out and started renting the house out. The house's price to rent slowly went up and I'd hear my grandparents talk about how ridiculous the price is. I'd say maybe five years ago if not less they were talking and said it is now $800.00 a month to rent. Even back then I thought wow that's a lot of money. I've been looking at houses to rent and have found that they are around $900 to rent a house, and that's just a one level three bedroom. There is another house I've seen for rent that is two levels and it is fairly new, it is $1000 to rent. Only one hundred dollars between the two places, and I find that kind of ridiculous but as things go, it could be worse. Would you rather rent an old house (but with up to date appliances and a good landlord) or a new house with a landlord who you barely see except for when he or she is asking for the money?

That's pretty cheap by California standards. If the old house is in good shape and the landlord is responsive, I have no problem with an old house...

I forgot to mention that my grandparents live in another more urban county, while we live in a rural county. I am not sure what I should expect the prices between the two counties to be, lol. I've been told California has higher prices on their homes for sale, so I imagine the rent at it's cheapest is about $1000 for a home there?

Depends on what part of the state. In some areas, you'd be lucky to get a studio apartment for that.
