3 Crashes in front of my house!

It was just after lunch and we were getting ready to leave. We would have left already, but I was making the kids search the house for a library video they seem to have misplaced (which we still haven't found). They were dumping the toyboxes and cleaning them back up when we heard the first crash. We ran out to see what happened. In front of our trailer park (and we're only the 2nd trailer in) is a busy highway. The speed limit goes from 55 down to 45 right in front of our park. Well, we don't know what happened, but in the middle of the road was a mustang which had been hit at both ends.. the rear and the front. The front bumper was torn off completely and it was on the side of the road, and the back window was smashed. There was another car on the far side of the road with it's front end smashed, and a van on our side of the road with it's front end smashed as well. A total of 5 people involved in this crash. A bunch of other cars had stopped and some pulled into our trailer park and helped the victims of the crash until emergency crews arrived. My family and I stayed and watched the whole thing until the tow trucks had come for the vehicles. It was a scary sight.. but also interesting in a way. We saw the firemen use the jaws of life to get the driver out of the van. They also got their hoses ready in case any of the vehicles caught on fire (the mustang and the van both were leaking gas). Thankfully there were no serious injuries in this crash. Once it was all cleared up we left to do our running around. We were gone for maybe 2 or 3 hours. When we tried to come back home our street was blocked off again, there'd been another accident. We had to take a 20 min detour to get to the other end of the road and there the cop let us through to get home. We then discovered that just up the road, not even a quarter mile, there'd been a second accident, very minor. But traffic had stopped due to that accident, and a tractor trailer coming along didn't realize the traffic had stopped, and he slammed right into a KIA which then slammed into a pick up truck. The KIA immediately burst into flames, killing the 2 people in that car. Nobody else was seriously injured. Some of my neighbors had been on the scene when it happened and are very shaken up because they'd seen it all and couldn't do anything to help. We also discovered that the 2nd and 3rd crashes happened only minutes after we'd left the house.. it's scary to think we could have been a part of them! The road was kept shut for many many hours afterwards. At like 5 or 6pm my oldest had gone outside for something and said all the emergency and news crews were still there.. and the accident had happened just before 2pm. Here is a news link to the accidents: http://www.9wsyr.com/news/local/story/2-dead-after-third-accident-in-Elbridge/gUX1_JPdwkC0Gr7f1kS0TA.cspx Have you ever witnessed a very serious accident? Has there ever been multiple accidents right in front of your home?

Oh no! that is terrible. Sounds like those other deaths could have been preventable if the Sheriffs office had been directing traffic better and had some signs out alerting the drivers to the accident a few miles back from the accident to give fair warning. It is hard to stop those trucks on a dime especially since most are driving above speed limit half the time.

Personally I think tractor trailers need to be more cautious. They drive too fast and aren't as aware of other cars on the road. I understand they drive long distances and want to get there in a timely fashion.. but being safe needs to be top priority.

Very true. They need to put safety first..so they will be getting home. since they are harder to stop you would think they would drive slower. But that doesn't seem to appear what they do. It is either get out of their way or get ran over it seems how they think most times.

Well they are big enough that it won't hurt them if they slam into someone else.. but the poor people they hit, OMG!

I feel so sorry for the people who witnessed the Kia bursting into flames. Being burned alive has got to be in the top three of the worst ways to die.

I also live on a busy street but the speed limit is 30 as there is a school right up the block...And there hasn't been any accidents around my house in the 30 or more years I have lived here....That had to be scary! I would seriously wonder why so many accidents were happening! Time for the city to check it out to advoid any more injuries!

I've lived here over a year, and this is the first accident I've heard of in the area.. it was just a bad day I guess.

That must have been really scary for you all to witness. It also makes you think about how precious life really is when you miss by minutes being involved in something that could end your life! I live on a main road, and it gets really busy as we have a theme park about ten minutes away and the traffic from there comes down our road. I honestly do not know how there has never been a crash along it, but as long as I have lived here there never has been. People drive down it like idiots, especially at night when all the young ones come out in their cars showing off. Two of my kids go out and play now that they are older, and they have to cross the road to get to their friends and it terrifies me, I have to cross them over as I could not bear it if anything happened to them out there.

Katsmeow how awful, I think that road seems to be a big hazard, they should maybe think about lowering the speed limit, it seems like a very dangerous road. I am glad you and your family were late to run your errands or you might have been involved and I am glad you were only a witness. Was the weather a factor that day?

No, the weather was fine, almost perfect actually. The road is not usually a hazard, I've lived in the town for 4 years, and in this house for over a year, and this is the first accident there's been. Just an odd day I guess.
