Characters that "stick" forever

Have you ever watched a show and said : "I could never see another actor/actress playing this part!"? If so, why do you think that is? Is the skill of the actor the one that makes the character unforgettable? Or is it that some actors are lucky enough to land in a very well written character that offers even to an average actor the chance to shine and amaze? For example, I could never see anyone else play the part of House MD except for Hugh Laurie. But is it he who gave life to such a wonderful character? Or is it that the character itself was so fascinating that it just....stuck with me and I got used to Laurie so much that I could never see anyone else in that role? I believe that in this case the character was bound to succeed because of the way it was made. On the other hand, an example of an actor who i think made his own part a success from scracth is James Marsters, a.k.a Spike from Buffy. I think that it was his interpretation of the character that made the script writers and producers shift their attention towards him and make its character a constant in the show.

The only TV series character that comes to mind that was played by two different actors is 'Bewitched' - the character, Darrin Stephens. I am sure that there are others, but I just can't think of any off the top of my head. Interestingly enough, both actors that played Darrin had the same first name. I actually preferred the replacement to the original, but it really wasn't a major issue for me. I like one of the other responses regarding the Batman actors. I have to agree that Michael Keaton was the best, all-around actor in that role. He did well as both Bruce Wayne and as Batman. However, I also feel that Christian Bale did an excellent job in the role. In your example of James Marsters - I have only seen him in two series and I think that he has done an excellent job of owning his characters in both. Spike in Buffy and Milton Fine/Braniac in Smalville are so completely different from each other and Marsters handles them both very well. Milton Fine is introduced to Smallville and you don't know if he is friend or foe to Clark. Though Spike was always portrayed as a nemesis, you didn't get the feeling that Fine was just because it was the same actor. All too often, an actor is cast in a particular type of role because they always portray that kind of character. Giovanni Ribisi often plays a jerk, for instance - you almost expect his character to be a jerk because he is cast in the role (one notable exception is Dex in 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' where he was quite likable). On that note, though...no, I couldn't see any other actor playing the role of Parker Selfridge in 'Avatar.'

I admit that I didn't watch Buffy all that much, but every time that I saw Spike, he was in the nemesis role. There were certainly some uneasy alliance moments, though. I guess I missed it when he became part of the gang. I think that you will like Smallville. The freak-of-the-week started getting a little old, but in the later seasons they shifted away from that. It does take some liberties with the Superman story - mostly with the time-line (when did Clark really meet Lois, for instance) - but it works really well.

Thank you for your great response, thorgrym! I have to say i was in search for a show to watch and you gave me a great idea with Smalville!I also liked Christian Bale as Batman and he was very appropriate for the change they tried.I mean for treating the character less like a comic book hero and more like a human evolving to that status. One observation to what you said, though. Spike was a nemesis for a rather small period of time and even when he was one, you didn't quite sense him as one (except for season 2) Since season 4 i considered him to be part of the Scooby-gang :D Oh and about Bewitched...I totally forgot about that, very good example! Happy myloting!

Oh, then I have to say you missed out on quite a lot, thorgrym! :) The best part in Buffy is the last 4 seasons. That's when the characters grow up more and develop from teenagers to young adults and everything gains consistency. And yes, you're right about Smallville. I like it a lot. I used to watch it on tv from time to time when i got home earlier. But seeing it from ..top to bottom is a whole different thing. For now i'm in the "freak of the week part" in which Clark begins to learn about himself and his powers. I like the way the story develops, but the Clark/Lana thing seems a bit artificial. They both know they aren't just friends, but they insist on not admitting that. It's not the fact they do it that bothers me, it's HOW they do it, their reactions and lines that i find somewhat artificial from time to mine. All in all though, it's very relaxing and i love watching it.Thank you for the tip!

I absolutely agree with you in fact I was going to say James Marsters as Spike.. Before I even got to the point in your discussion where you mentioned him.. So great minds think alike. Another good example is a show that is popular now.. PSYCH. Those characters are so unique.. I don't think it would have been even remotely the same if played by any other actors James Roday is simply hilarious. There are many parts that started as a one time character only to be written into the show because they have brought so much more to that character than anyone could have imagined.. One I can think of off the top of my head.. and I know there are more that I can not remember.. Is (and I am going back a few years here) was on the TV show BOOKER- with Richard Grieco - which was a spin off of 21 Jump Street. The main character was of course Dennis Booker but by chance they had an episode with a character Played by Lori Petty named Suzanne.. She was so Hilarious and Outrageous that she brought that character to LIFE. And the chemistry between them was great.. after watching that episode -it left you wanting more.. more of watching them interact.. and thankfully someone realized that.. because they started writing her into episodes more and more and then she was working with him. It was really a cool show. But the character of Suzanne would have been a one time thing that no one would have remembered if Lori Petty didn't get that role and make it her own!

Ah, too one of my favorite shows.. the X-Files.. I loved that show, watched it faithfully every week. But as much as I loved Mulder and Scully I always looked forward to Krycek. There is another character that had mega fans even though he was supposed to be..( or was he ) the bad guy. He actually had that part made for him.. he was originally in another episode in one of the earlier shows (it involved a shapeshifter) and they loved him so much they brought him back to be Krycek. Nick Lea rocks! And because of him I watched some earlier movies he had done.. John Woo's Once a Thief. and I was introduced to Ivan Sergei - Who I also think is spectacular.. He was later Henry on Charmed. I think he is hilarious and I love watching everything he does, because he brings so much CHARACTER to it

Hello , minx! I'm really having a hard time trying to keep up with all the active discussions I'm interested in (i shouldn't complain, though, I know it can be worse :)) I know what you mean with Spike. That character really has its magic and a life of its own!I have to say I haven't seen Psych, so I can't pronounce myself on that show, but since you so warmly recommend it, I'll probably watch it when I'll finish up Smallville :) I'm also unfamiliar with the other show you mentioned, Booker. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to shows. But reading what you said about character chemistry made me immediately think of Mulder and Scully form X-files! It's been one of my favorite couples ever, thought they are part of the "do they/don't they" category that keeps one in suspense, craving for more...interaction as you called it. I totally forgot about them when I started this topic, but the more i think about it, the more i realize ...They did "stick" with me. Not as individual characters, but as a couple. And I could never see either of them played by someone else outher than David Duchovny or Gillian Andersen! Happy myloting and i hope to hear your thoughts on the X-files couple or other couples that impressed you :)

yes, i agree with you. i think an actor or actress who makes us react is very good, indeed. i think the producers choose different characters for the role being played. when they audition, the producers or directors have that knack for choosing the correct person for that role. it makes the movie or tv show a success as well.

hello clocks! You're right. I too think that the decisions the producer and director take when casting influences a show very much. And i believe it takes a lot of intuition and imagination to picture that actor in a certain role and choose the one that fits him/her the most. But what do you think, are the shows that have already famous actors playing a greater success than the shows that have a more obscure cast that develops gradually unforgettable roles?

Many characters are like that...They were not at all sucessful in replacing Barny Fife on The Andy Griffith Show when Don Knotts left the role.. they tried, but it didn't work. Then they had to change the whole structure of the show..and it wasn't as funny anymore. Jeff Probst of Survivor couldn't be replaced....he is survivor and anyother face would just not be the same!

Hello, coffeebreak! Thank you for joining the conversation. I like your examples very much. They are exactly what i was hopping to find in this discussion. I'm very glad you approached the subject of game shows. I find it very hard to replace the host of Survivor as well. He's practically the face of the show, just like Phil Keoghan is for The Amazing Race. I think that in a show where contestants change all the time it is very important to have a constant, familiar face. Happy myloting!

For the life of me I can't think of a tv character that was played by 2 actors where one actor replaced the other. Maybe in remakes like superman shows. But I could think of 2 characters in movie remakes. Batman and James Bond. Although Micheal Keaton isn't the original Batman, he's the best batman actor for me. Sean Connery is the best James Bond as far as I'm concerned. None of the other actors who played these characters were ever as good or better than them.

Hey jonnifc, thank you for joining the discussion. Do you remember the series our moms and grandmoms watched sometimes? Like The Dinasty, Dallas, The Young and the Restless, etc? In those series lots of actors changed during the shows, impersonating the same character. Some were better, some were worst than the originals. Anyway, comming back to what you said, I know it's a subjective opinion, but in my eyes the best Bond ever is Pierce Brosnan.I personally prefer the older Sean Connery, the way he is now. And I absolutely dislike Daniel Craig. He lacks the style that Bond usually has.

I remember thos soaps but I didn't watch a lot of them to notice any changes in actors. Now I remember, I used to watch Days of Our Lives. The charcater of Bo Brady was played by 2 actors. I liked the first one, who played it only a few years, rather than the one thay played it till now. Maybe that's because I saw him in that role first. Just like what you said. Pierce Brosnan is better than Daniel Craig. I really don't get why they got Daniel Craig to play that role. He hasn't got the charisma of the other 2. LOL!

Well its not a show so much as a movie. I couldn't see any one replacing the harry potter trio. The reason i say this is : 1) They were British and no one could replace that 2) They have been in 6 of the movies so far. that is my reasoning. Also i don't think anyone can replace Megan Fox in the Transformers Movies. That would be weird! And plus the only person that looks remotely like her is Angelina Jolie and she is a little old.

Hello, munchie. Replacing the trio from Harry Potter. wow..that thought never crossed my mind! They practically grew on the set. I could never imagine someone else in their roles either. But maybe it's because we got used to the franchise in this way. 6 movies is quite a lot. I must say that what you said about Angelina amused me a little :)) She might be old a bit older, but she's a good actress and ..she still has it :) besides, with the special fx they have now, i doubt they even need make-up :) Kidding..it's just that i've seen a lot of pictures on the net with actors/actresses , pictures taken a short while after they finished certain movies in which they looked amazing (take 300 for example). And i have to say the pictures didn't resemble at all the extremely well built sexy persons we see on screen. So in my eyes, it's not the looks that make a person deserve a part, it's the talent. Call me old-fashioned if you like :)) Happy myloting!

I cant imagine anyone else playing Adrian Monk except Tony Shalhoub. I cant imagine anyone else playing Hawk Eye Peirce except for Alan Alda. These are two characters that came to mind right away when i saw this discussion rate topic !

Hello, w1986114! Interesting name, by the way :) I noticed that tendency in people as well...that once they see a movie/series they like and get used to it in on form, they dislike any further changes. Anyway, you didn't mention the character that "sticks" to you. I'm sure you must have a role that impressed you enough to become unforgettable
