I'm reading a crock pot chicken recipe and it has an ingredient listed as "browhing sauce" what is that? Brown gravy? It says it's an optional ingredient so no worries if I decide to make it... but still has me curious. Any ideas?

No it is not gravy. It is actually out here called browning sauce. You use just a little to colour food. I use some in my Xmas cake or pudding mix. If it is just for coluring then you can always use a light soy sauce. I use soy sauce if I have run outof the browning sauce. I hope this helps.Blessings

I am thinking that this COULD be what used to be known as 'gravy browning', which was a caramilsed substance that was added to a gravy made by the roux method to add the colour and flavour, I would not worry about not having it - personally I would add a stock cube instead.
It can be a litttle difficult helping people from different countries with cooking queries as we have such different terminoligy, for example :
TO YOU TO US
crock pot slow cooker
broil grill
zuchinni courgette
skillet frying pan
scallion spring onion
egg plant aubergine
and many more !!

that is so interesting to know! I didn't realize, in my naive sense of life, that people called them other things. Like i mean, other than language differences, i guess i didn't realize different names, in english, really existed silly as it sounds ha ha.

It is certainly not only in the kitchen that there are huge differences in US English and English English!!
Some other example - you say purse, faucet, hood, gas, garbage/trash, diaper and we say handbag, tap, bonnet, petrol, rubbish and nappy!!
There are tons of examples!

I yahooed it on our search bar and found out browning sauce is caramel coloring and pureed vegetables with seasoning used to flavor v arious
mea roasts. It can be bought at various stores so it is a commercial
product. it is not a brown sauce made with flour at all. thats a different sauce altogether.

There is this stuff that you can find at the grocery store that is called browning sauce and it is typically pretty close to the gravy ingredients. It comes in a little bottle similar to what a bottle of vanilla looks like. I've never bought it so I'm not sure exactly what it does. However, if you are wanting to use it at least you will know where to look at the supermarket the next time that you are there.
