In 1775 an American named David Bushnell built the first working submarine and was used to blow up the British warship Eagle during the American war of Independence.

The first operative submarine was envisioned in 1578 from the pen of William Bourne, a British mathematician and built by Cornelis Drebbel a Dutch inventor in 1620. This predates the Turtle by more than one hundred years.
