DO it by ourselves or Get a Lawyer?

Hi Mylotters, My husband and I got married last Nov. 2009. We want to apply for a marriage visa. He got a lawyer to do it and paid 500. But the lawyer didnt started it yet since we need to pay it in full which is we need $1,500 more. I do search online and it seems we can do it by ourselves...We dont have money yet to continue to pay for the lawyer. Does anybody tried to file for a visa from Phils to US? I need your advice and suggestions... Thanks....And how long does it takes to wait after filling the petition down to final interview......Thank you all.
