Buying a Second Hand BMW

We've been thinking of getting a second-hand BMW for some years now to be our second car. We have been blessed with good and reliable cars such as a Toyota Corolla, a Honda Civic, a Honda CRV, a Toyota Lite Ace and now a Mitsubishi Pajero Fieldmaster. As you can see, we're very much concerned about the reliability of the car, easy and relatively inexpensive to maintain as a lot of shops cater to these brands. Now we've heard that Bimmers are a bit harder to maintain but i would like to hear some more. And for our budget, we're looking at the 300 series or maybe 500 series from the early '90s. Diesel and AT trannies are also high on our list.
