I have a one year old beagle/jack russell mix and we have trained him a little at a time over the 10 months we have had him. I have been told at a year old it is the best time to train, so I need some helpful tips. Does anyone have a background in training beagles and or jack russells?

I'm sure you trained him well if you could live happy together for the past 10 months. So, I suppose he knows the basic commands and he behave well at his age. What exactly do you want to train him for? Anything special, obedience, hunting, agility?

It has been a chore living with him, and he tends to drive my wife crazy. But, he has mastered all of the simple commands: lay down, sit, stay------INDOORS!!!! We struggle when he gets outside, the beagle and jack russell comes out and he puts his nose to the ground and doesn't listen. We tried and tried and failed. I need some good ideas for getting him to listen when he's off a leash!

Oh, I see. I think you have to make him listen when he's on leash outside, first. Only when he always obey your commands on leash you can try them off leash. So don't think too far, take small steps. Now you have to focus on making him listen when he's on leash. I imagine it's a big challenge to walk him when he doesn't listen. Have you tried to distract him somehow from the 'nose to the ground' habit? With some food or with some favorite toys?

I just had to say that I have a beagle/jack russell mix. He is a very good dog. He had a jack russell head and a beagle body. I have never see another one. We got him when he was already two years old. We should have worked with him more but reguardless he is still a good dog. He picked up a lot of things from our other dog. He is still kind of hyper if you have a tennis ball and he is 9 years old now. We took our first dog to petsmart for a puppy training class it was helpful in learning the basics. He learned sit, stay, laydown, and leave it pretty well. Good luck and I bet he is just super cute. I wish I could have seen my Huckelberry when he was a puppy. We do have to be careful with the weight gain from the begal side, we have been trying to get him to loose some weight for a few years now so I would say watch out for that.

Actually, it is usually better to start training them early. Younger puppies are usually more eager to please. Once they become a "teenager" they are much more rebellious and will try to test you. When training you beagle, you should work in an environment that doesn't have a lot of distractions because you need to be able to hold his attention. Don't let him get away with anything. If he doesn't follow a command the first time then push him into the position you want him in and praise him. Don't give him a command you know he won't follow, but if your dog does something you want him to do say the command so he'll associate that action with that command. For example, if your dog starts to lie down on his own, say "lay" and praise him.
