As a matter of fact, the 911 tragic is never a confrontation between the muslim world and the West. It is actually a tragic due to the struggle over interests between the extreme Muslims, or rather, Muslim fundamentalists, and the imperialistic American government. So I cannot see any improperness in this proposal. Moreover, I think Obama administration is endeavouring to repair American's diplomatic image among the Muslin world, which was severely impaired by his predecessor George W. Bush. And this proposal might be one of his grand projects.

Ya i guess your are right too.It is in private land. I guess USA is against terroism and not against particular faith. However i fear the fall out maybe too great for Obama , he may suffer and lost in 2nd term. 9 11 is coming , and they have plan a big protest for that site against the building.

But I don't think Obama can afford to lose his Arabian allies as well. To differentiate himself from his predecessor, Obama has to cast his own dice - be it a gamble of winning or losing. He will otherwise find it hard justify his political manifesto made in the election campaign.

As I understand it, Obama hasn't supported the idea of the centre, but simply stated that the people who want to build it have a right to do it. This is the plain truth, after all they either own the land or have permission from the owners to build on it. The whole idea of private property is that the owners control what happens to it, so it's not really the government's business.

Yes it is in private land and lately the New york major bloomberg said it is about the right of people to pray whomever, whereever, whenever they like. This is freedom in USA i guess. It is interesting to continue to see the development. For Obama i think he really sticking his head out this time.
