Why did you join the military?

In 1990 I joined the USAF. I joined to get away from a very poverty striken location mainly but it was also during the build up of forces for Operation Desert Shield. I wanted to serve my country and I wanted to get out of the dead end life that I was headed for. Coming from a poor family I could not afford to go to school so I decided that the Air Force would be my ticket out. 16 years later I am still serving but for different reasons now. It seems that time changes what is important to an individual. Why did you join the Armed Forces?
