I have been recently diagnosed with Diabetes. My blood sugar has been high for quite some time but I've been watching my diet to some extent by not eating candy, etc. Would appreciate any suggestions on what to eat as far as snacks. Thanks in advance for any ideas and/or advice.

I'm not diabetic, but my Mom was. Fortunately for me, my brother inherited the diabetes. I have a good friend who is diabetic. Due to all that, I've recently joined a diabetic website. I've received some pretty tasty sounding recipes from them & they seem to have a lot of useful information on their site. You might want to check out dlife.com I'll email you the recipes & suggestions I've received from them so you won't have to ferret it out. I think the new rules for diabetics is to keep count of your carbs even more than the sugar. I don't quite understand it, but I do remember both nursing homes my Mom resided in giving her dessert every day. Then they limited the carbs she was allowed for the day. I think my cousin sent me some information on it when Mom was sick & I was upset that they were feeding her sugar with every meal. I'll see if I can locate it & will forward it to you when I can. I suggest you check out dLife & maybe even join so you can see what they recommend. I know Mom kept hers under control for over 10 years just by regulating her diet. I also know it's a real challenge to do it that way!!! Good luck & may God bless you!!!!

Thanks so much, Marissa. I do know carbs are important to watch. I will check out the site you sent. No more soda here and no more candy. Crystal Light will have to be my drink or water. One thing I don't know is if caffeine is something I should stay away from. Coffee in the morning is all I require and crave. Thanks for caring, sharing your information and for responding. Will meet with my doctor the end of this week and find out the numbers and all the other information. Have been through this before with high blood sugar but my previous doctor didn't do anymore testing. For awhile I was checking my blood sugar, about 3 yrs. ago, but then no more was said from my doctor. I watched my diet but guess that failed.

A friend suggested cinnamon on whole grain bread. He says cinnamon is the key to lowering blood sugar. I do drink coffee black and also ice tea with lemon sometimes and no sugar. Thanks for all your help.

As I said, I'm far from an expert on this subject, but I do think coffee is allowed as long as it sans sugar. Sweet & Low will probably become your best friend!!! My Mom didn't drink any caffeine drinks by choice. She only drank water & milk all her life. My brother loves his coffee & buys a large Starbucks every morning. My friend drinks 2 cups of coffee with Sweet & Low and cream every morning. I do believe that you can have a diet soda if you can drink them. I can't stand diet sodas!!! My brother says when he feels his sugar dropping, that he'll sip a tiny bit of regular soda until he feels his sugar level back out. I do believe that wheat should be your bread or pasts of choice. My Mom just loved her potatoes so she just decreased the amount of potatoes she ate every meal. Her Achilles heel was coconut cake so she made them less often & cut her slice thinner than before. She learned that a really thin slice of cake satisfied her craving as much as a thick slice of cake. Her doctor told her that she shouldn't eat certain foods in large quantities nor every day, but she shouldn't totally deprive herself either. She always told me that she just listened to her body & it would tell her what to do. It seemed for her that the real trick was NOT feeling she was being deprived of any food. If she was craving something one day & her body couldn't handle it, she'd wait until the next day or even a few days later. Portion control became her way of life!!! Good luck in figuring out what is best for you!!!!

Carolbee! One important thing you must remember is not to go hungry for a very long time.GO for a half an hour brisk walk at least 5 days a week.Try to include amla in your diet.Go low on processed foods, oily items, sweets; avoid fruits high in sugar content[like banana, mango];ensure you include more vegetables and fibre in your diet and less carbohydrates. When you starve for a long time and eat ,the glucose gets absorbed very fast in the system and so , you eat at least a piece of cucumber if there is a gap or go in for starch free , sugar free biscuits. Eat wheat bread and not white bread.

I haven't found any sugar free anything out there. The package may say sugar free but it will have something in it to replace the sugar and most times it is even worse.

I am asking/begging you to please watch your diabetes as best you can. My ex husband has let his go and there is a horrible price to pay now. He was living a very normal life when we were together because I refused to bake cookies and pie. He was maintaining with metformin pills. We haven't been together for a year and a half nd he went right back to eating french fries, junk/fastfood and sweets. Now his metformin has doubled, he also take another strong pill and he takes innsulin needle. His legs often don't work and his kidneys are shot all from the diabetes. People can live with diabetes and live a normal life but you need to look after yourself like never before. I attended a diabetes clinic with my husband a few years ago and he was told for snacks he could have rice cakes, angel food cake not iced of course and there is diabetis jam. There are also diabetic candies no sugar at all and they are quite nice. Good luck dear friend and Please Take Care of yourself. You'll be glad later you did. I have known people who live a full life with diabetes but I'm afraid some people just don't know the seriousness of the desease. My husbands mother went blind from it, which is because it will first hit the smallest arteries, and she also lost some toes. I worked with a lady who liked her drinks and she eventually lost one leg then the other leg till it finally cost her her life, alll because of her lifestyle. I also know of a lady in fact she is a diabetic nurse, she takes insulin as well, married with children, works and lives a very full normal life. The best thing you can do for yourself is take a class on diabetes, here in Canada where I live the class was free and open to the diabetic and the spouse. I learnt a lot and mainly just how serious it can be untreated. Please take care.

I love angel food cake so that's a good thing. Rice cakes I can live without. I know how serious this can be and will take care of myself. No more soda or candy. I am thin and have always been able to eat and drink whatever I like without the pounds piling on. I am guessing this is type 2 which comes with age and has been passed onto me from my mother. She also developed it with age but she had a horrible lifestyle and is no longer with us. Thanks for caring, sharing and for responding.

Am sorry your sister has to deal with this issue also. It will be a pain in the ole tush! Thanks to everyone on myLot who responded to this discussion, I do understand what I need to do or not do. The dr. kept telling me to exercise but I have a terribly messed up back so any exercise beyond drinking water or going to the bathroom is a problem! I do make myself walk the steps as much as possible throughout the day but it's not always easy. Who said the golden years were fun? Thanks for responding.

Usually doctors will tell you that you should not eat candies and any sweets right? But there is one doctor who is really good in diabetes who makes my father Blood Sugar from 16mmol/L to 7mmol/L in just 3 months. Yes! there is a help of medications but he really modifies the diet of my father. 1. You should not Eat too much Rice and Bread... he told me that it is not only foods that are sweets that are avoided but also foods that contains sugar. When sugar are metabolized in the body it releases many glucose. If you want to eat bread, just eat a minimal amount like 1-2 bread a day or 1/2 to 1 cup of rice per meal 2. You should not Eat too much Cantoons or Noodles- Noodles also contains starch, just eat a minimal amount of it. 3.Get you energy from Fruits- It is a big misconception for people that sweet fruits should be avoided. Fruits contains Fructose and not glucose, you can look it up in the internet... Diabetes has problem with glucose and not FRUCTOSE... Eat fruits rather than sweets. 4. Exercise regularly- it helps glucose to move in to your cells rather than it is intravascularly. 5. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day- it is to cleans your body. 6. As much as possible- avoid softdrinks- 1 glass of Coke is equivalent to 1 cup of rice, if you want to slim down.. stay away from softdrinks and colas. Just drink water! 7. Drink only- Fresh fruit juice- some commercial juices contains syrup(sugar). Only natural juice will do. 8. Monitor your blood glucose regularly. You will know if the treatments are working. 9. If you are taking Metformin- an oral hypoglycemic agents- it can cause lactic acid build up in the body, makes you always tired....( DRINK VITAMIN B complex). 10. Always bring candy... or any foods that has concentrated sugar. In case you will feel dizzy, diaphoresis or any signs of hypoglycemia.... HYPERGLYCEMIA IS MUCH BETTER THAN HYPOGLYCEMIA- this can lead to coma.

Thank you for your excellent response. I have cut out all sweets such as soda and candy and am trying to eat much healthier. It seems to be working. Think I am allowed about 100 carbs a day but not positive on that one. I quit eating potato chips also. I don't have a weight problem which is a major plus.
