My dad has diabetes. He have to control his sugar intake so he takes artificial sweetener - Splenda. I prefer normal sugar though. But I try not to put sugar on drinks/coffee, I also lessen soda intakes and eating chocolates. I fear for my health because diabetes is in the family.

I will not eat artificial sugar, it is nothing but chemicals which are also bad for you. Diabetes also runs in my family, so I understand why your dad can not eat cane sugar. But there is a natural sweetener you can get at your local health food store. It is much more expensive, but if only the person with the diabetes eats it, I think it is worth investing in. If G♥d forbid I ever get diabetes, that is what I'd do. Actually my curiosity got the better of me and I found two. Here is the link. Stevia is the one I was thinking of. http://nutrition.suite101.com/article.cfm/natural_sweeteners_a_boon_for_diabetics

Oh I know and I believe some even cause cancer, but you won't get anyone to admit it..Artificial sweeteners also give me a headache, which leads me to believe that it can't be good. I hope that you can get one of these natural sweeteners, I would buy stevia, but it is expensive, yet worth it if I couldn't eat cane sugar and so far I am good..:)

Sugar is not the enemy...so I have been told and I am a type 2 diabetic. I can use sugar but in moderation. I also use Splenda and/or Stevia. Neither one of these have additives in them. Splenda is made from sugar, Stevia is made from a plant. As for chocolate, it is good for you if it is the dark chocolate made from cocoa beans. Not like the cream chocolate in a Hershey bar. The dark chocolate has antioxidants in it. I have a blog about Type 2 diabetes at Squidoo as well as 2 more with recipes and one just for diabetic desserts. These are the recipes I or one of my diabetic friends have tried and we eat these foods daily. I also have a dessert every day. I just had my check up Wednesday and my blood sugar was normal, cholesterol was low and my overall health was good. If you want the links to these blogs please PM me for them. I'm sure you will learn more about diabetes and how you can help your Dad control this disease.

Yea, you should lessen those sweet things. Actually, try not to take too much sugar. I prefer normal sugar too. Artificial sweeteners could cause harm to the body and too much sugar will cause cancer.

Sorry to hear this. I would think that artificial sweeteners are chemicals which are equally bad if not worse. And I hate the idea of consuming them as well. If we can go without having sugar or having them very much less in our drinks and the food we cook we would. We know that alot of sugar is present in almost any food/drinks we bought outside.
